Orchard Road has transformed into a starry, colourful paradise for Christmas.
Launched alongside the light-up is a nostalgic photo exhibition on the past Christmas celebrations along the shopping belt, dating back to 1984. Held in front of Shaw House Urban Plaza, the exhibition to commemorate 50 years of tourism development in Singapore will run till Jan 1 2015.
Unlike previous years where festive decorations were limited to one or two colours, this year, the 2.88-kilometre stretch of Orchard Road is lined with multi-coloured Christmas trees and psychedelic stars. The many colours reflect the “great diversity of people that live on this island”, said Mrs May Sng, Chairman of the Orchard Road Business Association (ORBA), which is behind the light-up.
Shoppers can also look forward to an outdoor carnival on Dec 6, when parts of the shopping stretch will be closed to traffic for the third instalment of Pedestrian Night. The night will feature live performances by homegrown artistes and screenings of local short films.
Shoppers can learn more about the decoration concept of this year's light-up at this "star" outside Wisma Atria (left) or pose for selfies with this 7m-tall rotating Christmas tree in front of Robinsons The Heeren.
Some 500 stars and 520 bauble were used to decorate the trees.
