First over-water suites at its luxurious resort in Jamaica's Montego Bay next summer. The five suites will be located on a private island, just a short distance from the main resort, and sections of glass flooring will allow guests a close-up view of the marine life. Guests will also have their own butler, and there will be outdoor Jacuzzis and showers.
Anantara Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa
is the only resort in the UAE with over-water villas. There are 18 glass-floored floating houses in total, located on a stunning manmade beach on the eastern part of The Palm.
Baros Maldives
The Maldives might well be the birthplace of the over-water villas, but there are several ways in which Baros' Maldives’ particular ones stand out. The enormous sun decks have huge four-poster day beds and villa hosts are on hand to cater to guests' every need.
Cocoa Island by COMO, Maldives
These over water villa look spectacular from the air, and they're equally stunning close up. They're inspired by traditional dhoni boats and are built above one of the shallowest lagoons in the Maldives, so you're unlikely to struggle when it comes to spotting local marine life.
Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort and Spa, Tahiti
Bathrooms with Italian carved marble and glass panels in the floor are just some of the perks guests can expect at this luxurious. The large, straw-thatched decking area is the perfect place to relax with a cocktail, while you watch the (friendly) black tip sharks swim by.
Huvafen Fushi, Maldives
The 12 Ocean Bungalows at this Maldivian escape have plunge pools on the balcony (just in case the one-metre walk to the sea proves too strenuous) and they all face out to sea. The resort is also home to the world's first underwater spa.
Kandolhu Island, the Maldives
Plunge pools on the decking are also a feature at this resort, which opened in February. Glass walls make the most of the breathtaking views, and the bathroom, with its ocean-facing bathtub, is the perfect place from which to watch the sun set.
Pangkor Laut, Malaysia
Pavarotti was just one fan of this Malaysian Resort, which was opened by the Italian opera singer - there's even a suite named after him. We recommend the spa villas, so-called because these over-water suites offer direct access to the spa, which is also located just a few inches above the turquoise water
W Retreat and Spa Maldives
This is another Maldives resort that deserves a mention. The resort's Ocean Haven and Ocean Oasis suites have enormous circular day beds, wraparound decking and plunge pools that stretch from the living area to the balcony outside.
St Regis Bora Bora, French Polynesia
Outdoor whirlpools, private pontoons (just in case you've remembered to bring your super yacht) and outdoor showers are just some of the facilities guests of these over water villas can look forward to, but our favourite bits are the hammocks, which hang just inches above the crystalline water.
Elounda Beach resort, Greece
Greece isn't famous for its over-water villas but the ones at Elounda beach resort - known as Yachting Club Villas - are certainly worth checking out. Intended to resemble the rear end of a yacht, there are leather ceilings designed by the luxury car brand Maserati, sensor-activated Jacuzzis and more tech than you can shake a stick at - all of which can be controlled with an iPad.
Most of this is at Maldives
