The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is located in northeastern Brazil. It is a low and flat area covering roughly 1500 square kilometres.
The park is frequently flooded due to abundant rain, but strangely little to no vegetation grows in the park. When the heavy rains come during July and September, water collects in the valleys of the sand dunes, resulting in many blue or green pools.
Vehicles are not permitted in the park as the national park is protected and does not have roads within it. Visitors are driven to the entrance of the park by four-wheel drive trucks.
Despite it being a desert, the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is home to a variety of fish living in the pools. Fish eggs are brought from the sea to the desert by birds.
