Fans of the Smurfs had reason to rejoice when the little blue characters took over the world once again during the annual Global Smurfs Day. Crowds thronged Bugis Junction in spite of the haze to catch a piece of the action. Gracing the event were local celebrities, including MediaCorp artistes Edwin Goh, Jayley Woo, Jeffrey Xu, Shane Pow, Sora Ma and Vivian Lai.
Global Smurfs Day was started in 2011 in anticipation of the release of The Smurfs. Participants all over the world expressed their love for the adorable blue munchkins by dressing up as Smurfs, which also set a world record for Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour Period.
This year saw local DJ Divian Nair being jetted off to Paris as our very own Smurf ambassador while other celebrities enjoyed the day with the public, taking photos at the augmented reality photo booths and Smurf mascots. The celebrities in did their part for charity by designing personalised Smurf T-shirts, which were displayed and are up for auction. The public was then treated to a screening of the original Smurfs movie, drumming up excitement for the much-anticipated sequel film.
