Not even Hurricane Sandy could halt the annual Mermaid Parade! After a fundraising effort, hundreds of thousands of people came out to take part in the first post-superstorm Mermaid Parade along the boardwalk and Surf Ave. in
Coney Island, Brooklyn on June 22, 2013. Revelers put on their mermaid best for the 31st annual nautical-themed event. Here, one parade-goer completed her mermaid costume with a matching long tail. Check out more photos from the wacky spectacle ...
Aye aye, Captain! A group dressed as sailors posed for a photo during the Mermaid Parade in Coney Island,
Brooklyn. Parade founder Dick Zigun thought Hurricane Sandy and the bills racked up from damage would force cancellation of this year's parade of scantily clad celebrants. Donors, however, kicked in more than $117,000 to keep the tradition alive.
The parade was led by this year's King Neptune and Queen Mermaid: "30 Rock" star Judah Friedlander and "Real Housewives of New York's" Carole Radziwill (c.). Radziwill struck a pose with her co-stars LuAnn de Lesseps (l.) and Sonja Morgan (r.) during the festivities.
