While other couples quibble over infant diets and baby names, Mr Tan Kok Leong and his wife, a housewife, struggled over how to care for a newborn.
Mr Tan became paralysed from the waist down after a fall almost 30 years ago during lion-dance training, while his wife was born without her her forearms and hands.
But their disabilities have not got in the way of setting up a family. Mr Tan has also carved out a career as a mouth painter.
Their daughter, 16-year-old Tan Ming Hui, used to stand far away from them in public when she was young because she was embarrassed of the attention from others.
But these days, she stares back at passers-by until they avert their eyes.
