Over the past three days, the hottest topic discussed online was "Who is he?" with thousands of netizens joining in the search for the identity of the son.
It was finally revealed that he is 62-year-old Ding Zhu Ji, a former officer with The Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Justice based in Tainan.
His former colleagues told Taiwan's Apple Daily that Ding applied for early retirement to take care of his mother in 2007, a year after his father died. (The mandatory retirement age in Taiwan is 65.)
They said Ding's 85-year-old mother fractured her leg last month, and Ding had been sending her follow up treatment. The picture was taken during one of the trips.
"We're not surprised. He is known as a filial son," said one of his ex-colleagues.

A 62-year-old Taiwanese man has been thrusted into the media spotlight after a photo of him carrying his mother to a hospital went viral online.
It was an undergraduate who spotted Ding Zhu Ji carrying his mother around in a baby sling at the Chi Mei Medical Centre in Taiwan and snapped a photo then.
His upload sparked an online frenzy, which culminated in the discovery of Ding's identity, who is a former officer with the Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Justice based in Tainan.
Those who knew him said that Ding has always been a filial son, rejecting a promotion as he didn't want to move to another district so that he could take care of his mom.
STOMPer MamboJambo, who came across the photo online, wrote:
"I'm touched by Ding Zhu Ji's actions -- how many people in Singapore, let alone the world, will do something like that for their mothers?
"The funny thing is that the photograph captured him in a posture all mothers would adopt when their children are young, making it a full circle of sorts with him taking care of her now.
"If I could knight Ding for his actions, I would. He's definitely earned my respect!"
He's got a big message for all of us. God bless him and his mum.
Urdhaytb, nice to see you again. Miss your presence.

Photos and a video of Ting Tsu-chi carrying his mother into a hospital have been widely shared on the internet.
The mother of Taiwan's "filial son," Ting Tsu-chi, passed away on March 15th due to heart and lung failure, reports our Chinese-language sister newspaper China Times.
Ting's touching devotion to his mother, captured by photos and a video of him carrying her in a hospital in southern Taiwan, has become a viral story on the internet in recent weeks. Sixty-two-year-old Ting carried his frail mother to see a doctor on March 2nd at Chi Mei hospital in southern Taiwan. The photos and video of Ting carrying his mother, wrapped in a cotton cloth shoulder sling, were repeatedly posted on the internet worldwide. He was dubbed a model of filial piety.
The devoted son took his mother to the hospital again on March 5th, where she stayed for 10 days. She passed away on the 15th.
Ting stayed beside his mother for all 10 days that she was in the hospital. "Everyone is doing the same, and I am not special. I just did my best and stayed beside her, he said." Ting's wife said he sounded like he was in tears whenever discussing his mother's illness over the phone; she said she had married the right man.
Ting's devotion was challenged by a legal battle with his brother four years ago. Both sons wanted to take care of their mother, but disagreed about which methods to use — Chinese or western medicine. Ting Tsu-chi was granted the rights to take care of his mother.

it's a relief for him at least. his duty is done. Life and death is part and parcel. We can separate one from the other. Where there is life, there also is death.
