Originally posted by Summer hill:Yes, we should get Christmas Island back. It is such a national shame that we sold our own territory back then in 1958. The island has many potentials and we can fight for oil in the Indian ocean and earn lots of money.....why not? Plus have a lot of delicious red crabs leh....I can go there for fun and food.
It wasn't sold. It was transferred by the british that still ruled Singapore, and a compensation given for the loss.
And if you noticed, it was 1958, Singapore wasn't a sovereign state yet, so it technically wasn't ours to begin with.
Fight for oil in the indian ocean, wah you say it like a kid sia.
govt buy back and make that island a paradise for their beloved ah neh from India.,
Pinky, do you want buy it for your beloved ah neh from India?

Right again. Nobody could do anything about it being transfered to Australia back then. Ok, that was back than. The Island is nothing now. No more phospate. The former mayor has even now suggested it sold to Indonesia. Let us take this opportunity to get it back...cheaply. Yes...let us shout the Singapore war cry out loud. Cheap Cheap Cheap.
crab farms.

That island is the ideal landing point for asylum seekers getting into Oz, if it becomes Singapore's, it becomes Singapore's problems.
Then a whole talking point would erupt whether getting the island back was a good idea or not.
I don't deny that there might be plenty of unexplored oil reserves in that area, however it's geography makes it a challenge that it is not profitably viable.
Oil reserves are currently being explored, and exploited off the northen coast of western australia, and if you use google maps you can see the difference in water depth from there to christmas island, and indonesia.
Just slightly west of Barrow's island australia, its already 5km deep, quite a challenge for today's modern drillships, and semi subs. I would know because I've been to most of the rigs in that area the past 2 years, and believe me they are not cheap to drill.

Not found in Sg or msia, nearest will be Philippines and eastern part of Indonesia. It's a big crab with large pincers and the body is like lobster, good for 2 but I think good for acid one meal. Most countries dun sell them now they are under the endangered species but still they are plentiful on hard reef islands.
Best cooked in coconut milk.

I prefer crab maybe messy but taste sweeter than prawn, also less allergic for me than prawns.
