Think safety and drive safely.
That's the message the Singapore Oxygen Air Liquide or SOXAL and the
Traffic Police want to drive home during this year's heavy vehicle road
safety campaign.
The company, which has a fleet of 100 heavy vehicles, says it has been holding a series of in-house competitions starting 2008.
This includes selecting the safest driver as well as drilling in the message to not speed.
And it has worked.
The number of heavy vehicle incidents in SOXAL has drop from 10.7 road
incidents per million kilometre travelled in 2008, to 5.8 this year.
Mr Woo Siew Wah, Managing Director of SOXAL explains why the series worked.
"We want to employees to get closer to the police. I think in the past,
we tend to be like police and thief, you catch people. We don't want
that. We want it to be fun. It's important to participate and when you
participate, people will do it willingly."
According to the traffic police, there were more than 120 fatal
accidents in the first nine months of 2009, compared to more than 160
for the whole of last year.
Similarly, the number of deaths resulting from the accidents has also dropped from about 170 last year, to the current 130.
