Young men spend more than women shopping online: Survey
SINGAPORE: Young men tend to spend more on online purchases compared to women, according to press release from Singapore Polytechnic (SP) on Tuesday (Jan 12).
SP said that a survey of youths between the ages of 15 and 35 found that 50.6 per cent of male respondents reported they spent more than S$100 per month on online purchases, compared to 41.3 per cent of female respondents.
The survey was conducted in June 2015 by students from Singapore Polytechnic's Diploma in Media and Communication (DMC).
In the survey, a total of 20.4 per cent of the 416 female respondents said they browsed for products and services online daily, compared to 14.5 per cent of 400 male respondents.
DMC said these results indicated that "while females shop online more often, it is the men who spend more on online purchases".
The main motivations for shopping online among those surveyed were to get items or brands that are not available in Singapore, to access a wider range of items or brands, and convenience.
Privacy also appeared to be a driving factor, especially for young men. A total of 64 per cent of male respondents and 55 per cent of female respondents said they shopped online to purchase items without friends or family knowing, while 61.8 per cent of male respondents and 54.1 per cent of female respondents said they shopped online to keep their identities private.
DMC lecturer Ms Clarice Sim, who oversaw the survey, said: “Singapore youth appreciate being able to shop online for things without scrutiny from other people."
"Some may have secret buys they want to hide from their friends or family, such as gifts during special occasions or expensive items that they want to hide from nagging parents,” she added.
Top purchase categories for young men who responded to the survey included apparel, technology and movies, while the top categories for the women were apparel, beauty and travel.

actually, women like to see the real thing than men. Women buy mostly on cloth so they will need to try out or see it to avoid buy the wrong size or suit. whereas, men mostly buy the product different from women.
so that is the reason why men buy online item more than women
Not surprising, women tend to be less risk taker then man, so they lend towards stuff that is less costy online.
thanks for sharing!
E-commerce supports quick decision making with easy product returns and dispatch policies that arract the male population, as there not much of fussing about buying clothes. So its quite natural that men are more avid online shoppers than woman.
