16 town councils formed, including 2 new town councils
SINGAPORE: Sixteen town councils have been formed following the General Election, the Ministry of National Development (MND) said on Thursday (Oct 1).
Of the 16, two are new – Jalan Besar and Marsiling-Yew Tee – 13 are reconstituted and one, Tampines, unchanged. The Potong Pasir and Moulmein-Kallang town councils have been dissolved.
Starting Thursday, the management of areas in the Potong Pasir Single Member Constituency (SMC) will come under the Jalan Besar Town Council, which will also manage areas in Jalan Besar Group Representation Constituency (GRC).
Areas under the Moulmein-Kallang Town Council will now be managed by the town councils of Bishan-Toa Payoh, Holland-Bukit Panjang and Tanjong Pagar based on the new electoral boundaries, the ministry said.
From Dec 1, the new Marsiling-Yew Tee Town Council will take over management of the areas in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, which were previously managed by the town councils of Chua Chu Kang and Sembawang.
13 TOWN COUNCILS RECONSTITUTED
Thirteen town councils were reconstituted as some areas under their purview have become part of other towns, the ministry said. The management of these areas will be transferred to the reconstituted town councils with effect from Dec 1.
Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East will now be known as Aljunied-Hougang, East Coast will be known as East Coast-Fengshan and Jurong will be known as Jurong-Clementi. The three town councils were renamed at the request of their MPs, MND said.
“MND encourages all town councils to work together to ensure a smooth transition, so that the needs of all residents can continue to be served,” the ministry said.
