A Boeing 777 Malaysian airlines crashed in Ukraine near the Russian border, Interfax is reporting, citing “a source in the aviation circles.”
“Boeing Malaysian airlines operate flights to Amsterdam — Kuala Lumpur for 50 miles before entering the airspace of Russia, began to decline, he was subsequently found burning on the ground in Ukraine,” the source said, adding that 280 passengers and 15 crew members were onboard.
Military expert Dmitry Tymchuk says the Malaysia Airlines plane crashed to the north of Torez in the Donetsk region, according to Ukrainian journalist Myroslava.
The area is controlled by pro-Russian separatists who are fighting the Ukrainian army.
On July 8, the State Aviation Administration of Ukraine closed the airspace to civilian aircraft after a military transport plane was shot down.
The aircraft reportedly had to cross the Russian border at about 9:30 EDT.

A Malaysian Airlines’ Boeing-777 has crashed over Ukraine, close to the border with Russia.
The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Anton Geraschenko said the plane carrying 285 passengers and 15 crew members fell.
Malaysian Airlines has confirmed that it has lost contact with the plane when it was flying over Ukrainian soil.
The passenger plane was expected to enter Russian airspace at 5:20pm local time, but never did, a Russian aviation industry source was cited by Reuters.
“The plane crashed 60km away from the border, the plane had an emergency beacon,” ITAR-TASS cited its source.
The Donetsk People’s Republic, where fighting continues between Kiev and opposition, has rejected any involvement in the incident, as there are reports that the plane was shot down.
It said its self-defense forces just don’t have such military equipment.
Residents have reported about finding debris from a plane, which they say could belong to the Malaysian Boeing. They also said no bodies have been seen, RIA Novosti reports.

MAS to refund cancellations in full
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Malaysia Airlines said it would offer full refunds to customers who want to cancel their tickets in the wake of the MH17 disaster, just months after the carrier suffered another blow when flight MH370 disappeared.
Passengers can change or cancel their tickets without financial penalty until Thursday for travel throughout the rest of the year, the struggling national airline said.
"In light of the MH17 incident, Malaysia Airlines will be waiving any change fees for passengers who wish to make changes to their itinerary to any MH destinations," it said in a statement.
"Passengers who wish to postpone or cancel their travel plans can obtain a refund, including for non refundable tickets."
A spokeswoman on Sunday confirmed Malaysia Airlines would refund cancelled tickets in full, with the costs borne by the carrier.
She said she could not reveal how many customers had already taken up the offer.
Flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur is believed to have been shot out of the sky by a surface-to-air missile, crashing in strife-torn eastern Ukraine Thursday with 298 people from a dozen countries on board.
The disaster came four months after the disappearance of Flight MH370, which lost contact with air controllers on March 8 while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.
The plane is believed to have mysteriously gone off course and crashed into the southern Indian Ocean, but an extensive search has so far found no sign of the wreckage.
Both planes were Boeing 777-200s.
Malaysia Airlines said in May that MH370's disappearance had a "dramatic impact" on its first-quarter results, with cancelled bookings helping push the company to a loss of RM443 million (S$173 million).
State fund Khazanah Nasional, which holds the airline's purse strings, said in June it would announce a plan to revive the carrier within six to 12 months.
Malaysia Airlines had already raked in losses amounting to US$1.3 billion (S$1.6 billion) over the previous three years.

Malaysia Airlines mulling name change, new flight routes, UK's Telegraph reports
KUALA LUMPUR/LONDON - Malaysia Airlines, reeling under the pressure of two catastrophic aviation tragedies, is mulling a name change and restructuring of routes to repair its reputation, the Sunday Telegraph has reported.
Besides a new name and new flight routes for the 50,000 passengers it serves daily, rebranding may also include a different investment structure and a restructuring of the airlines' 20,000 staff.
Airline's commercial director Hugh Dunleavy, writing in Sunday Telegraph, said: "Our majority shareholder, the Malaysian government, has already started a process of assessing the future shape of our business and that process will now be speeded up as a result of MH17.
"There are several options on the table but all involve creating an airline fit for purpose in what is a new era for us, and other airlines," he said.
Malaysia Airlines MH17 crash: Black boxes show crash caused by rocket shrapnel
KIEV - Black boxes recovered from downed Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in rebel-held east Ukraine show shrapnel from a rocket explosion caused the passenger jet to crash, a Ukrainian security official said Monday.
International investigators "indicated that data from flight recorders show that the reason for the destruction and crash of the plane was massive explosive decompression arising from multiple shrapnel perforations from a rocket explosion," Andriy Lysenko, spokesman for Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, said.
Data from the doomed airliner's black boxes was decrypted in Britain after being handed over to Malaysian officials by pro-Russian rebels controlling the crash site of MH17.
Investigators leading the probe in the Netherlands - which lost 193 citizens on the doomed jet - refused to confirm the latest information from Kiev, saying that they were "waiting to get a more complete idea of what happened."
Kiev and its Western allies have accused insurgents of shooting down the plane, killing all 298 people on board.
Almost $46,000 worth of mystery withdrawals made from MH17 passengers' accounts
The Star / Asia News Network
Aug 14, 2014
Withdrawals of up to SGD$46,000 (RM111,000) have been detected from the bank accounts of four passengers of the doomed MH370 flight that vanished early March.
City Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Asst Comm Izany Abdul Ghany said the amount was withdrawn through a number of ATM transactions.
The bank concerned noticed the suspicious withdrawals on July 18. Following an internal investigation, the bank lodged a police report on Aug 2.
“We are investigating the case as unauthorised access with intent to commit an offence,” ACP Izany told reporters after the handing-over of duties at the Cheras district police headquarters here yesterday.
The offence, under Section 4(1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997, provides for a fine of up to RM150,000 or imprisonment not exceeding 10 years, or both.
ACP Izany did not rule out the possibility of an inside job, adding that police were investigating the case from all angles.
“We are getting CCTV footage from the bank to identify the suspects involved,” he said, adding that those with information on the matter should call the police hotline at 03-2115-9999 or report at the nearest police station.
It has been more than five months since MH370 went missing on March 8 while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing and the flight was thought to have ended somewhere in the south Indian Ocean based on satellite data provided by Inmarsat.
At one time, a multi-national team, including the United States, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea, was looking for the plane, which went missing with 227 passengers and 12 crew members on board.
Last week, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said he would meet Australian leaders soon to sign a memorandum of understanding on the two countries’ collaboration in their search for MH370.
Liow also gave his commitment that the search for MH370 would continue despite the recent tragedy of MH17, which was believed to have been shot down by missile over eastern Ukraine.
The search is ongoing as the Government is working on identifying the bodies of Malaysians killed in the MH17 incident, he reportedly said.
The Australian government, said Liow, had announced that it tendered out a section of the searchwork to a specialised team.
It was also reported that the search tender had been awarded to Dutch company Fugro.

Almost $46,000 worth of mystery withdrawals made from MH370 passengers' accounts

Kuala Lumpur (CNN) -- More than a month after the airliner they were traveling on was shot out of the skies above eastern Ukraine, the bodies of 20 Malaysian passengers arrived back in Kuala Lumpur as Malaysia observed a national day of mourning.
Families of the victims of Malaysia Flight MH17 gathered at the Malaysian capital's international airport for the repatriation ceremony, as a special chartered Malaysia Airlines Boeing 747 touched down just after 9.30 a.m. local time Friday following its journey from Amsterdam.
After the airliner taxied to its stand at the airport's Bunga Raya complex, usually reserved for receiving visiting dignitaries, it was met by uniformed pall bearers from Malaysia's armed forces, who proceeded to unload the caskets, which were all draped in the country's flag, into the waiting fleet of white hearses.
The victims' families were joined by Prime Minister Najib Razak, who was accompanied by the country's king and queen.
A minute's silence was observed nationwide at 10.55 a.m. as the last of the caskets was unloaded.
"Last month, 43 Malaysian lives were taken over eastern Ukraine. Today we mourn the loss of our people. Today, we begin to bring them home," the prime minister said.
"Our thoughts and our prayers are with the families and friends of those who lost their lives. Today we stand with you, united as one."
MH17, which was en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam, was shot down by a missile as it flew over Ukraine on July 17, killing all 298 passengers and crew on board.
Forty-three of those on board were Malaysians, including 15 crew members and two infants.
Investigators have been carrying out the painstaking task of recovering bodies from the crash site before transporting them to the Netherlands for identification -- a process that could take months, Dutch authorities have warned.
About two-thirds of those killed were Dutch, with Malaysians and Australians making up a large proportion of the others.
Day of mourning
Malaysia Airlines, which experienced its second tragedy this year following the disappearance of Flight MH370 as it flew to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur on March 8, distributed black ribbons to cabin crew company-wide, while a flag at its offices flew at half-mast.
A statement from the airline read: "Malaysia Airlines is deeply saddened by this devastating tragedy. It has been a long and painful wait for the families and friends of the passengers and crew onboard MH17."
While the mood at the airport was expectantly sombre, the awaiting families were nevertheless prepared for the occasion. Some broke into tears as they shook hands with government ministers and airline crew, but most just took their seats at the side of the tarmac to await the special flight.
The bodies of the 20 passengers will be taken to their respective home towns for burial after the service.
