SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the country needs to keep up with the rapidly-changing world, or it risks being left behind.
He reiterated the point in a wide-ranging dialogue session at Ang Mo Kio, involving mostly elderly residents, as part of the country's national conversation process.
Mr Lee told the
younger participants with aspirations it is important to also have hope,
and that means being prepared to work and change.
To the older residents, Mr Lee urged them to remain active by being employed part-time, for instance.
One
of the key themes that emerged during the session was the need for more
health care support and facilities to allow Singaporeans to age in
place.
Many residents expressed worry about how Singapore's
greying population can be adequately looked after. Some felt more can be
done to boost health care and support for senior citizens.
Mr Lee acknowledged that demand for health care has grown quickly, so there is a need for more hospitals, doctors and nurses.
He also noted the need to have more eldercare facilities in housing estates, close to senior citizens.
Ang Mo Kio for example, has two new senior activity centres serving some 600 elderly residents.
"Senior
citizens have their own aspirations; they want to have their own area
where they can come together and interact with one another," said Dr Lam
Pin Min, chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Health.
"So I hope that all citizens will be able to support this
initiative of having more Senior Activity Centres in the void decks, as
well as in the community."
Residents also had worries about public housing - if flats will become smaller.
Mr
Lee said: "If you want everybody to have a piece of land (like a)
kampung plot, I think (it is) difficult. But (if) everybody (wants) to
have a good house and a good neighbourhood, I think we can (do it)."
Other concerns residents expressed included cost of living, public transport and job opportunities.

Unless most of locals are staying in the cave without internet connection, most of them know what is the world evolving and changing.
It is him and his team that need to buck up and clean up their act.
Lots of issues have arise under his care and his high paid elite were unable to mete out explanation on how they happened and what is done to revolve them.
The most evident of them all is the housing and transportation.
Sad to say, he can only be seen when there is no issues.
When he is needed, he is nowhere to be seen or heard.
change? then why isnt our bills and salaries changing for the better? as long as numbers change is a change lah?
can we have WP for punggol east ? tired of those

I got a feeling that Workers Party will win this PE by election. So many people fedup with PAP... hope those 60% wake up to reality... but Singapore media controlled by PAP so powerful, alot of people genna brainwashed and cannot wake up, lol. I was quite surprised people so easily brainwashed, and the ironic thing is, these brainwashed people complain about North Koreans being brainwashed while they themselves were without knowing it.
NK is a illy axcuse for the cheena people to create trouble for US and the region. they now cannot dae not openly declare war so use Nk as their extension. if not why NK with al the weapons nearer to cheena they also dont bother. theyr probably had some part to play in supplying arms to NK.
back to topic.
we cannot have one part state. pink one has to go. his injection of bastard false popualtion will not work. its bad for business. some suggestions to be made may be bitter for sg in short term. but it will need a longer term to see results. what GDP growth we dont need that still can be ahead in asean and asia.
those cheap foralse people and labor are what they need to get money. and money they anyhow spend like the baby bonuses. its hsould be given to the middle and lower income - the poor. rich people should not even benefit from them not a bit. rich people and people aearning large anounts from property should be taxed heavily! not people who never sell flat never rent flats they also tax!
now rental alwasy go up because they refuse to look at increaasing landspace. they only want to look at sort term refuse to take the bitter good medicine. that's why thoings are costly even when the workers are all cheap cheena people!
We need to be cheaper better faster .
