SINGAPORE: The setting up of a wellness centre at Block 108 Potong Pasir Avenue 1 has been very much in the news.
MP for the area, Sitoh Yih Pin, said the issue has been unnecessarily politicised, and he gave a full account of the decision during a dialogue session at the end of a ministerial visit to the constituency on Sunday.
Health Minister Gan
Kim Yong got a sense of the demographic profile of Potong Pasir when he
took part in a series of activities lined up for his visit of the
constituency.
The elderly make up nearly half of the residents of Potong Pasir.
There
has been much buzz over a proposed wellness centre at Block 108 Potong
Pasir Avenue 1, where former MP Chiam See Tong held his meet-the-people
sessions.
It is understood that voluntary welfare organisation
Wan Ming, which has been in the area since 2002, is setting up the
wellness centre.
"This whole process took months, it's not within
a day or week that we decided on Block 108. If you want to build
anything at the void deck, there are many considerations. One of the
most important considerations is that after that there must be
sufficient space for the residents to use for birthday parties,
weddings, wakes, block parties... we have to ensure that," said Mr
Sitoh.
Other plans for Potong Pasir include an NTUC supermarket,
a POSBank branch and a gymnasium - all near the community club along
Potong Pasir Avenue 2.
Former MP of the area, Mr Chiam See Tong, was also present to meet Mr Gan and Mr Sitoh.
Mr Gan said Mr Chiam was in good spirits and spent his time sharing stories about Potong Pasir.
