SINGAPORE: Education Minister Heng Swee Keat has called for Singaporeans to stay united in the face of challenging economic times.
He was speaking to residents attending Serangoon's National Day dinner on Saturday evening.
Mr Heng said the world is experiencing challenging economic times and Singapore has not been spared the storm.
But
Singaporeans have weathered the difficult times together over the last
five years, even as the government took bold and decisive measures.
He said Singaporeans have a unique identity with a blend of cultures, values and social norms.
And
Singapore's security, social stability and economic success are the
result of harmonious relations between the different races.
Mr Heng said there will always be new challenges ahead.
"We
have always pledged ourselves as 'one people, one nation, one
Singapore'. This cohesiveness is what makes Singapore unique and extends
beyond our immediate families," said Mr Heng.
"This can only
happen if we maintain open communication, make an effort to connect with
one another and come together to share our hopes and aspirations," he
added.
