SINGAPORE: Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim said building a better future starts with the family, the pillar of society.
In his Hari Raya Aidilfitri message to Muslim Singaporeans on Saturday, he said families that are strong overcome difficulties much more than material well-being can.
He highlighted the
recent success of three award recipients - President Scholar Adil Hakeem
Mohamad Rafee, Public Service Commission Scholar Maryam Hasanah Rozlan
and winner of the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal, Muhammad Kamal Jauhari Zaini.
Dr Yaacob said all of them have family members who're supportive and inspiring.
Dr
Yaacob, who's also Minister for Information, Communications and the
Arts, urged parents to set a good example and bring up their children
with good values so that they can achieve their potential.
He said every effort that they put in will pay off.
Dr
Yaacob also urged the Malay-Muslim community to continue to look out
for one another, particularly the less well-off and youth, by finding
them sources of support, ideas and encouragement.
He said the community is working with national agencies to reach out to families and youth.
He
added that the recent decision to give sharper focus to families with a
new Ministry of Social and Family Development highlights the importance
that the government places on strengthening families.
"Let us
continue to put in our best effort. Let us continue to look out for one
another. Let us continue to progress together as a community and
nation," Dr Yaacob said.
"On this blessed evening, my parliamentary colleagues and I wish you Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri," he added.
