SINGAPORE - Another priority for the NTUC is promoting better work-life balance for mothers.
In response to calls by the National Population and Talent
Division for ideas to boost Singapore's falling fertility rate, the
labour movement is recommending that working mums be given six months of
paid maternity leave, and an additional six months of unpaid leave.
"It's important for us to encourage employers to embrace better
work-life (balance). Particularly after delivery, there are certain
stresses for women," said NTUC President Diana Chia.
"Many
women, because of this difficulty, leave their job to take care of
their family. And to get them back to work is also an enormous task. So
we're actually looking at how we can phase in this," she added.
"It's good, this will encourage more women to have babies, but it
depends on the company. (For) small companies, I don't think they can
afford to give six months of maternity leave followed by no pay leave,"
said one member of the public.
"The main thing is whether
the employer accepts these rules. Some employers won't allow their
employees to take a long break of one year because they have to look for
part-time manpower," said another.

tts nice
but not nice for the bosses
single women will be snapped up by bosses
they can implement but bosses who dun like will jus 炒鱿鱼the preggie ones
This policy should have been implemented 10 years ago and we would have started to reap the benefits today.
Not the "grow GDP at all costs" strategy that leads to million dollar salaries.
Some Co. will find ways to tekan after these ladies when they returned to work and make life difficult for them. In the end, either self resign or lay off citing bad performance, no business etc...........
my company very funny
so many preggie, 3 mths maternity, come back promoted
The employer don't like it. There are two workers on the payroll for that period, only one is working.
The part-timer won't like it. It waste her time. As she is just warming the seat, she want real employment.
The maternity leave worker don't like it either. She is uncertain if the job will be there, and if it is, it will have changed. The filing system will go wry first.
This is a work culture thing.
It works in the Scandinavian countries because that is the culture.
In Sg, the culture is cheaper better faster and make as much money as you can/grow GDP at all costs.
The govt already said they will not follow the practices of these countries yet now you have a "feel good" statement by the union to sound like they are trying to help the workers.
As long as the govt opts for the easier cheaper option for short term gains, these kinds of policy will never work or be implemented in Sg.
So you have to take what they say with a pinch of salt.
Or a spoonful.
If you are the SME boss, would you employ them and let them go have babies for 6 months ?
Who will cover their duties ?
If you are the pregnant lady's colleague, you will be doing double work and more if there are more ladies going pregnant at the same time ?
Unless your company is super solid, your grading and bonus will be affected if you are not around for 6 months unless you are damn solid.
They dun employ singaporean guys due to NS commitment.
Now, they are driving employers not to employ Singaporean women.

They might as well have come up with a 10 year maternity leave package.
Sounds even better.
If somebody wants to have 3 kids consecutively every year, then that means she needs to work only 18 months out of 36 months.

for your consideration please
4 months of maternity is already quite long.
how about increasing baby bonus instead? money talks.
How about 10k for a first child, second child 15k, third child at 20k. then throw in freebies like if free education, uniform and textbooks from kindergarden to secondary schools, I am sure lots of couple will consider giving birth. also throw in subsidised gynae rates.

Give one million dollars per baby, you will see a record number of babies born next year.
Money talks.
Not maternity leave.
