SINGAPORE : A technician has been charged in court with stealing a rifle from a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) National Serviceman at Pasir Laba Camp.
30-year-old Mohammad Ridzuan Jamari was charged with one count of committing robbery while armed with a deadly weapon.
He allegedly stole a "SAR 21" rifle from 22-year-old Kang Tai at the camp's Standard Obstacle Course on May 8 this year.
Jamari was believed to be armed with a screwdriver, measuring 20 centimetres.
He was working as a technician on a contract basis at the time of the incident at the camp.
Channel NewsAsia understands that there were other people around at the time to apprehend Jamari.
The rifle was also not taken out of camp.
He will be back in court on July 16 for a pre-trial conference.

Private contractor is trying to steal a rifle "in camp".
He want to be rifleman, not screwdriver man...
like rifle so much, join the army. anyone got check the ID is oink colore one?
Maybe he lost one and don't want to sign 1206.
its such a big item - how can lost? hmm... must be sergeant switched off the lights, so that is the root cause
Did the man stole or rob the NS man of the rifle?
Steal means taking something not belonging to him while the owner is not around.
Rob mean to physically take something from another person.
Technician with a large screwdriver means he is "armed with a deadly weapon".
Is that part meant to make it look like the NS man is under deadly threat and therefore was robbed of his rifle? And detract from the fact that one day of unarmed combat training in the entire NS stint is of absolutely no use.
Just reading between the sparse lines.
Maybe the NSF is still recruit stage, because UC is not taught until he gets sent to unit. And not all units have UC in their curriculum.
Last time my sergeant also steal my rifles, can I charge him?

Did he use a deadly screwdriver?
Basic unarmed combat training was already included in BMT training in my time, and that's more than 5 years ago.
The only explaination, why the guy with the rifle lost to a freaking 20cm screwdriver, that I can think of, was that the rifle was slung on his back, rather than the front.
Or the soldier is just a wuss.
Because a quick whack to the face with the rifle should have been enough to concuss and perhaps even kill if he got lucky. I can't imagine that even with a screwdriver to the neck, the soldier couldn't have done that.
On the other hand, I have never handled a SAR-21 beyond parades. So I speak only for the M-16 which is longer and appears to be a better stick to whack with.
Anyhow, the soldier will probably have a lot of answering to do.
20cm screwdriver > Rifle
some more

He attempts robbing someone of his rifle infront of other ppl??? Either he's desprate for something or he's mentally unstable... or he could just be an idiot...

kids nowadays haben go in NS already hand pain leg pain whole body pain le... U cannot compare ur time...
Just take a look at the SAF subforum
As much as I think the soldier should have done more, I'm forced to wonder....
If a civillian threatens to stab me with a screwdriver unless I hand over my weapon, what are the Rules of Engagement for this?
If I give the bugger 1x buttstroke to the head, will I be charged for assault?

most people are not used to such situations and hence let their natural reflex take over. and the most natural thing the body will do is freeze - i.e. do nothing. only someone who can fight very well or very foolish will try to resist another person carrying a 20cm screw driver. a stab anywhere could be fatal. you talk like you are damn good at handling such 情况 situations.
I have never been robbed of my rifle.
But I was used to walking around places so crowded with civilians with rifle and live rounds in hand. (not the airport and trains. I dont do that.)
Grabbing MY rifle would have huge consequences and I CANNOT let that happen.
Slinging my rifle on my back is a huge NO-NO.
Moreover since most of the time, the magazine loaded is the empty magazine, I do have to be prepared for any eventuality of using my rifle to whack at close quarters. And this situation is probably shared not just by me, but for countless others.
Anyhow.
You do realise an NSF is a soldier we are supposed to put our faith in?

U do have to realised that few takes the training seriously. Most take it as a "troublesome" period that they have to get thru. When things happen, even they have been trained, they will still get stunned/shocked.
U can put ur faith in a soldier if he behaves like one and treat it seriously...
I find it hard to put my faith into people who thinks that it's troublesome...

We don't even know his PES status. Not all NSF have any kind of combat training.

Unfortunately we still have to put some degree of faith in the conscript.
Because we dont have much choice as unarmed civilians.
I am pretty interested at what MINDEF will do.
Ban screwdriver in camp?
I remember that knifes weren't allowed at least for my side, but still we smuggled them in because those were essential tools.
*me takes a screwdriver and attempts to stab NSF for gun.
Well, the soldier was robbed at screwdriver point at the SOC, so yes I reckon his rifle was slung to his back, and it was definitely not loaded.
The first reaction when getting robbed at weapon point, is to freeze, and follow what the attacker says, because you want to stay alive, not risk dying.
We can all say we're trained in this and that, and he was this, so he could do this and that, but we ain't him, we dunno whatthefark went on. I could have said I have a rifle what, I can buttstroke anyone i wanted.
They were all in the pasir laba camp, of course there were other people around to apprehend the wrongdoer!

actually I was wondering what was that technician thinking??? He thinks he can just rob and walk off like nthing happen despite being at a place with people around?
I know I know! He was SPF/SCDF last time and wanted very badly to touch a gun!
