SINGAPORE: Former president S R Nathan said Singapore must harness the value of the social sciences to tackle the challenges that the country faces.
That's because problems have become more complex.
Mr Nathan made this
point at the Singapore Management University's inaugural Social Sciences
Conference on Saturday, where academics and pre-University students
shared their thoughts on the global economy.
He also held a forum
discussion with over 250 students on issues relating to Singapore's
limited natural resources and ageing population.
He also addressed concerns raised about foreign talent.
Mr
Nathan said: "We are a small country with a small population. We may
not have all the talent that is required to take advantage of the
opportunities that come with scientific change, technological change or
financial services change. And when we can't, we have to tap from
somewhere else. I do realise that it causes some unhappiness but if you
can't do it yourself, we can't set up a protectionist barrier so that we
don't attract talent."

praaaataaaaaa

i want prata with curry! mmm
But the talent we accept are most likely rejected talents in their original country, no?
I think hiring foreign consultants/experts to initiate, with local talents then assuming mantle is a better alternative, but what do I know about world economics.

The social problem have become complex because of the high influx of very diversified culture, the casinos, limitation of residential land. Would there be any unbiased statistics on our social ills?
We can do many thlngs to lessen the impact but perhaps we'll never know if the root of the different problems benefit society more than it'll harm them.
I still find the 2 casinos very hard to accept...
or rather, the gahmen caused many talents to run away
They should used a tape recorder and played what the old man have said.
He remain what he was for the last twelve years.
He should return his salary to sg for nothing that he have done.
The people have already moved on and accept that we need pple with other trade to complete the picture.
Not cheaper pple to replace the cleaner, hawker, shop assistant, IT specialist and engineers.
Then, what is the purpose of the local in studying in university and with the job vacancies filled up by ship load of pple from oversea.
He misses being in the limelight. Talked rod to attract attention. A non talent himself talked rock talked crap , chay! Please return to the public the money he earned in his position as a president.
He is the one and only empty vessel makes the most noise Singapore president.
