SINGAPORE: A 40-year-old man was sentenced to a year's jail on Thursday for stealing S$30.
Noraizam Abdullah admitted to stealing the money from a donation box in a mosque to buy food for his family.
The court was told
that the donation box at the entrance of the Darussalam Mosque at
Commonwealth Avenue West was found missing on December 11 last year.
Police investigations showed that a woman had earlier spotted Noraizam moving the donation box to the second floor.
When
questioned, Noraizam told her he was just following instructions. This
was later found to be false, by which time Noraizam had left the mosque.
A check found the padlock on the box tampered with and S$30 cash missing.
Investigations revealed Noraizam had used his lighter to break the padlock at a staircase landing in the mosque.
Noraizam, who has a string of previous theft offences, pleaded for "a last chance" and leniency.
The court also heard that Noraizam, who has a handicapped mother, stole the money to feed his family.
In
sentencing, the District Judge warned Noraizam he may face corrective
training if he is sentenced for a similar offence in future.
For theft, Noraizam could have been jailed up to seven years and fined.

I was thinking the same thing.
He must be some Macgyver.
Why?
Should be jail for 1 month...
A poor man stole $30 to buy food for his family and is jailed for a year.
Haiz.......
Sad legal system we have here in Singapore.
Times are bad.
probably jail him so that he will have free food and a place to stay?
The thief is using sympathy to get off the hook.
He is 40 yo, and thinks it is ok to steal to feed his mother?
"Hey my mother is sick, so it is ok for me to rob you."
"You want to steal also can, but must have some one needy at home first."
Can't he ask the mosque to give aid to his mother and family instead?
But on the other hand, a year of jail for theft of $30 also abit too extreme.
what kind of mosque is that
Our gahman really should start changing some of its policy.
Theft is wrong. Holding up our CPF money till the day we die, this is also wrong.
The guy could have just walked into the mosque and ask for a zakat assistance...

I am sure he "made" up the story about his handicapped mother too.
Maybe he should be hung?
Stealing $30?
I mean what can you get for $30 these days?
If the intend was to steal and get rich from it, surely any idiot would not have stolen $30, sometimes you need to use those fats in between your head to think.
$30 can probably get you 10 meals only.
Staunch PAP supporters seem to lack empathy for the less fortunate.
A more pressing question is.
If he had received some monetary assistance for his circumstances, perhaps such things wouldn't have occured. But then PAP would probably devolve joblessness and inability to find work as laziness or high expectations.
What is the PAP doing to help needy folks like these?

So if he's unemployed and can't get a job, he should just leave his mum to die of hunger?
have anyone heard of any cases of people dieing due to hunger in singapore?
Rob a few millions from the people, you call him a PM; steal $30 to provide food for handicapped mom, you call him a thief.
Singapore got too much money. This is where your GST money is going to.
The 40 year old man now is happier person because he get to have free food, free accomodation and free water for 1 year.
For stealing $30 is penalty for one year jail? Then all the beggars in singapore will start stealing to receive free accomodation at singapore prisons.
If singapore want to really be serious about combating crime, they should first concentrate on the corrupted PAP officials who are being over-paid and manipulating the system for more power.

i think its ridiculous too.
some accidents resulting in death dont even get such harsh sentence.
i am so angry.
He only wanted $30 and food for his family and his handicapped mother. >:(
Why play up the $30.
Did he know how much there is in the box.
He knew there was money there, he want to steal it. Thats it. He is a thief.
You mean $30 is not sufficient to make him a thief?
Then Parliament should pass a law that say that taking anything above x value without permission is theft. Below x value is ..... well go complain to the magistrate.
Haiz he juz need that $$ to buy food for his family
