‘The Truth Behind APP’s Greenwash‘ report details how the company has made the same promise about moving to 100% plantation-sourcing (ie using non-native timber) on four separate occasions - missing self-imposed deadlines in 2004, 2007 and 2009.
APP now says it will meet its commitment by 2015 - but we have our doubts.
As well as the immediate environmental damage, of course, there’s also the devastating contribution made to global warming by the release of greenhouse gases from this deforestation. Calculations suggest the carbon footprint of APP paper could be more than 500 times the company’s claim, and 10 times the North American pulp and paper sector average.
Many global buyers, including some of the biggest paper users in the world, have already ceased purchasing from SMG/APP. But APP still sells office paper, packaging and other products, and is increasingly expanding globally into tissue products like toilet paper.
We urge all global buyers and investors to read the report and join the growing list of responsible companies that have cut all ties with SMG/APP - including UK and global names like Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Sainsbury, Office Depot, Staples, Kraft, Mattel, Adidas, Woolworths, Nestlé, Unilever; Ricoh, Fuji Xerox, Gucci and Lego. Many others have cancelled their contracts quietly or have committed to avoid buying from the company.
Please help end APP’s shameless destruction of Indonesia’s tropical forests and the homes of Sumatra’s last surviving tigers.
