The Starcomm shop in Choa Chu Kang MRT station makes $800 a day on average, selling cellphones and accessories.
Its sister outlet in the Esplanade station, on the other hand, makes only $150 a day.
It is also touch-and-go for the shops located in MRT stations since public transport company SMRT started converting the spaces in its train stations into retail units about six years ago.
Those with more shop units are set up like mini-shopping malls, which SMRT has dubbed 'Xchanges'.

why would people want to shop at these stopovers, when there are plenty of full-size malls out there?
seems like the proposed "idea of convenience" is not working anymore~
Instead of focusing on providing efficient and affordable transportation for the people, they spend all their time coming up with all these retail outlets in stations.
They just want to make more money fromthe rentals.
Just like the cab companies.
All depending on rental income to make even more money.
Recently, i saw that they arebuilding more shops at woodlands mrt.
Should be able to make more money from rentals because the human traffic there is massive.

Correct.
Depends on what you are selling.
Some shops think they can compete with the shopping malls just beside the mrt station and so sell things in competition.
Food can still make it,but the nearby malls offer better variety and more choices.

Who is sunny?
Sbst, you think this is the way to go?
Instead of focusing on ridership, now focus on rental income?

This is common knowledge.
Have you been living under a rock for the past 20 years?
smrt changed a lot since she took over.
before that we hardly see any shop in train stations. now they are everywhere.

smrt's core business will soon be in property.
Make more money from rentals than passenger ridership.
Maybe these shops should start selling portable fans to MRT commuters.

This could be your chance at being a millionaire.
Just sell 1 million of these at $1 net profit per fan.
If any of these ideas fail, it is good news for me.
STOMPer Kelly is annoyed at having to walk about 300
metres inside Holland Village MRT station, just to catch a train. The
STOMPer wonders if the station is designed in such a way to make the
shops in the station more prominent.
Said the STOMPer:
"I am disappointed with the layout of the new Holland Village MRT station, which I feel is poorly designed and user unfriendly.
"Between
the main MRT entrance and exit to Holland Village and the station fare
gates leading down to the train platforms, there is a passageway of more
than 300m that commuters have to walk through in order to take the MRT.
"I
believe that this long walking distance is appalling and unacceptable
as it prolongs overall travelling time for commuters and inconveniences
users who are in a rush.
"The focus of the station should be on
the train services and as such, the train fare gates and platforms
should be built closer to the entrance/exit of the station while the
shops lining the long passageway can be placed elsewhere in the station.
"With
this unnecessary passageway of shops, I am compelled to believe that
maybe SMRT is more interested in earning extra rent revenue from these
shops than to enhance commuters' overall travelling experience."

Depends on who you are lar.
Smrt huat.
45% of earnings come from rentalincome.
300m?
thats a long way.
but then whoever it is approved isnt it?
profit is more important than commuter's travelling time.

I thought Singapore corporations not allow to move away from core business.
Like OCBC not allowed to run Robinsons.
depends how u define core business
if they say robinsons needs credit cards so it is part of banking
then no probs for ocbc
