Police called after newlyweds refuse to pay for dinner

It was a wedding that ended with the police arriving as unexpected special guests.
They were called in to adjudicate after a couple who held their nuptials at the Hotel Novotel at Clarke Quay on Friday refused to pay the $8,000 balance on their bill.
Their beef? Smelly fish and fish that was not cooked properly were served to their guests. The couple also claimed poor service from the hotel staff, complaining there were not even enough wine glasses provided for guests to toast the couple.
According to a Shin Min Daily News report on Saturday, the couple said they tried to negotiate with the hotel's banquet department for a reduced rate, but were unsuccessful. This eventually led to the hotel calling the police to the scene.

Maybe the guest have ask for refund of their hong bao due to the fish and wine cup.
Or the guest did not pay the market rate so the couple did not have the money to pay.
But, it spoil the wedding at the end of the day when such a event happened.

yep, interested, what can the police do? can they force the couple to pay? I don't think so.. cause it is contractual..and only in a court, can this be settle, right?

there's always chances of the food quality being different during the food-tasting session and during the actual banquet
the hotels can do many things to "compensate"
like offering 1 free table, 20% discount.....
or give them vouchers for hotel stays or restaurants
(though usually, with the bad experience, ppl wun bother to go back)it may be rather unreasonable to not to pay the balance at all
2 dishes not up to expectations but the rest was happily consumed, rite?
we do not know how bad is the bad as we oni have this side of the story
