SINGAPORE: Former Singapore president S R Nathan said a calmer atmosphere exists in the country, thanks to the work of charity organisations.
Speaking at a tribute ceremony dedicated to him, Mr Nathan praised the different organisations who were able to come together to address the problems in society, putting aside religious, racial and linguistic affiliations.
The Singapore
Buddhist Lodge, Jamiyah Singapore and Hindu Endowments paid tribute to
Mr Nathan, who stepped down as president after being in office for 12
years.
Mr Nathan said he was inspired by prominent members in the
charity organisations to do many things when he was president of
Singapore, such as embarking on the President's Challenge in 2000.
He encouraged them to continue the good work and strive to do better.
Mr
Nathan said: "There are many lives amongst us (who are) depending on
your charity and your goodwill. Don't let them down. However heavy the
obstacles you may have to overcome, or however unappreciative some
people can be, especially those whom you serve, for you are all your
brother's and sister's keepers."
