Harry Lee Kuan Yew Says Nerve Disease Hasn’t Affected Mind
Nov. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew said a nerve disease that causes him to walk with an unsteady gait has not affected his mind, the Straits Times newspaper reported today.
“I have no doubt at all that this has not affected my mind, my will nor my resolve,” the newspaper quoted Lee as telling reporters yesterday. “People in wheelchairs can make a contribution. I’ve still got two legs, I make a contribution.”
Singapore’s 88-year-old founding father has sensory peripheral neuropathy, which impairs feeling in his legs, his daughter Lee Wei Ling wrote in a column in the Sunday Times yesterday. He was 86 when the condition was first noticed, said his daughter, who is the director of the National Neuroscience Institute.
While Lee’s brain and muscles function normally, the lack of feeling in his legs upsets his balance, she wrote.
Lee, whose son Lee Hsien Loong is prime minister, has retreated from politics since the People’s Action Party that he co-founded won May elections with the smallest margin of the popular vote since independence in 1965. He stepped down from his cabinet position of Minister Mentor in May and resigned from the party’s top decision-making body last month.
From 1959 until 1990, Lee served as prime minister, overseeing the island’s independence from Great Britain. During his tenure, Singapore grew from a fishing village to the world’s largest container port as Lee developed a tightly controlled state economy that encouraged foreign investment.
Lee’s daughter also has sensory peripheral neuropathy and underwent training to improve her balance. Her father can’t do as much “strenuous exercises” because of his age, she wrote. He does treadmill exercises and is taking medication, which will help him continue to work, she said.

I heard that the disease won't affect his lifespan. That means he'll get to live to 100 even if it means spending the last few years in a wheelchair.

I dun know much about politics, so I am not sure why the comments from everyone is so full of hate and detest to Mr Lee KY.
Didn't he fought for our independence, and built a foundation to what we are today? It is not easy to manage a company of 1000 workers, let alone manage a country of millions of people! Although our country is small, but Singapore has a big name with good reputation. Compared to some other countries, we already lead a peaceful and stable life. Although expensive, but good things must come with a price, right?
I still think it is not easy to step in his shoes, considering the sacrifices he had made. Sometimes we see an elderly sick person whom we dun even know and we feel compassion, let alone someone who made your life better. Its like biting the hands that feeds you. If anyone is not happy, please go live in other countries. It's so embarassing to see my own people being ungrateful and wishing the death of the founder of his own country, and being ridiculed at by other countries.

Yes we are thankful for his past contribution. You bear in mind LKY is not the only one contributing to Singapore. Why do you only concentrate on LKY contributing and ignore others? Why so blind? Look at other countries which are doing well, they do not have LKY.
He did it more for personal reasons, he indulges in fame, money, recognition, power , dictationship. He never hesitate to use unkind words against the people who feed him. A very ungrateful evil dictator. Please do not be so one sided and shallow to see only the surface. For a man who admits he jailed his opponents without trial is not worth the respect.
Tell us, when is running a country easy? He admitted it is easy for him to manage Singapore because of the small size, if given a big country he will not make it.
