SINGAPORE: MP for Sembawang GRC Ellen Lee said schools play a pivotal role in nurturing well-rounded citizens who maintain a sense of duty to the country while pursuing individual goals.
She welcomed the Education Ministry's new emphasis on Character and Citizenship Education (CCE).
Ms Lee said many
people appear to have forgotten the fact that no individual can claim to
have succeeded on his or her effort alone.
Ms Lee also said the government should emphasise family bonding.
And at home, parents should teach children the lesson of appreciation, which should be reinforced in school by CCE.
"If
our children learn the lesson of appreciation well, they will grow up
to be compassionate citizens who shoulder the responsibility of looking
after the old and disabled," said Ms Lee.
"They would have
learnt that they should not just pay back what they have received but
also pay forward so others will benefit from their actions and create a
virtuous circle of kindness," she added.
