Miss Singapore World 2011 Valerie Lim's costume shows a mix of cultural
influences from Singapore's different ethnic groups. The result is a
rather confused mix of styles -- some have even said it looks like a
carpet.
Contestants for Miss World 2011, including Miss Lim, are
currently in Sao Paolo for the Miss World pageant, which will be held
on Sep 12 this year.

outfit deliberately combines different styles into a mish-mash of

Unfortunately, though I am behind Valerie a hundred percent, I have to
agree.
"Perhaps local designers really need to decide if it is
necessary to force the idea of a multi-cultural society across. After
all, we are many things, not just a country defined by ethnic groups --
that's just so outdated."
It gives me the impression that it's made in China, and further processed in India~
You mix all the styles together you end up with rubbish already wah.
For example you teach bilingualism in school, you get singlish.
Trained in mandarin school, get mandarin.
Trained in malay school, get malay.
Trained in tamil school, get tamil.
Trained in english school get english.
Trained in english, mandarin, tamil, malay school, you get rubbish.
This is a wrong policy. It is not a correct policy.

I rather they send in a traditional malay, tamil, indian, chinese or peranakan costume.

lol...nice one.
i think the 'carpet' is an attempt by some designer who thought of mixing all the cultures into one piece of clothing.....result? = carpet. Like FireIce said, won't win anyway, but the costume will make it even more confirm.
She should just wear a distinctly chinese costume with a bit of malay and indian influence. This one looks too confused.

There is no such thing as a Singapore national costume. It doesn't exist. To invent one will be stupid.

I don't think there is even a need to have any malay or indian influence. If you are chinese just wear chinese costume. Malay just wear malay costume. Indian just wear indian, peranakan just wear peranakan.
Looks like a rug from Arab Street.

Agree, just wear according to your ethnicity.
