SINGAPORE: Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said putting education as one of the top national priorities has given the country a vital competitive advantage.
Speaking on Friday at the 100th Anniversary Dinner of Zhonghua Secondary School, PM Lee said the government would continue to improve the education system and "raise the quality of every school".
"Whether [they are]
neighbourhood schools... vocational institutes [or]... schools with
students with special needs -- we will create many more pathways to
success, not just a single, narrow road to the top," Mr Lee said.
"And we will give every Singapore child the opportunity to succeed and the means to achieve his potential and fulfil his goal."
To do this, Mr Lee said the community must be involved.
He cited Zhonghua Secondary School as an example of how schools can benefit from such support.
The school, started by Chinese community leaders, had been maintaining close links with them.
In fact, many who attended the dinner were from the vast alumni network of more than 1,000 ex-pupils.
The school was the first Chinese-medium girls' institution to be established in Singapore.
