Every year at this time, town councils and the National Environment Agency (NEA) see a spike in one type of complaint: against the practice of burning incense paper.
Figures from the NEA show that in 2009, there was a monthly average of 55 feedback cases on the indiscriminate burning of joss paper. But in August and September of the same year, during the Hungry Ghost Festival period, the number of complaints almost doubled to about 102 on average.
The agency declined to reveal the amount of feedback it received on this issue last year.
Earlier this month, a 52-year-old man suffered a heart attack after a scuffle with neighbours who were unhappy that he was burning joss paper and incense.

post edited due to advertising..
gotta say this... use the barrels or the designated "cages" to burn the offerings...
please try not to burn up the field, the grass patches or the bloody playground like in the past years
my neighbour lazy to go downstairs, so they have an incense burner kept outside their flat and then burn the incense. once I opened my door, strong wind blew in the burnt incense paper and scattered into my flat, Gee. not to mention the incense smell even though the window is closed.

Pour all the ash into the new citizen's house.
its the pollution and smell of incense that is hard to bear in public places. non chinese of course would be pissed off during this time of the year, not to mention chinese, who are from other religion and do not practise this kind of incense burning.
i'm catholic and i don't mind it unless they burn big black patches in fields or be dumbasses and decide to burn a HUGE pile at the same time causing flying burning offerings to burn down other things...
this is part of tolerance and acceptance of other religions and creeds to do their thing which is the whole point of curry day today...
but each lot of people have to be reasonable too... just like not burning up the estate just because they're stubborn
This year, fortunately, nobody attempted to burn down the field....like they did over the past years.
Previous year they succeeded in burning down half the field and activating the firefighters and police. Could be due to this incident.
what about the harmful effects this has on people and environment? people health is also important right? second hand smoke is bad, what about second hand burner?

Burning joss sticks is ok, it gives out lesser smoke as compared to burning joss papers which give out more smoke.

Burn them.
how to be a first world city, you have have a 3rd rate ancient practises. China has banned these type of practises isnt it.
Something that bugs me is that these people do not burn everything, but throwing the white slips of paper all over the floor after they burn the rest into the bins.
This practise only started last year and before that there wasnt such practice.
Why got new practice come out?
Usually complain by the New citizen. GO away la.
The joss paper thing has been around way before the new citizens problem came.
We should respect a persons right to their pursuit of happiness, however this joss paper burning is a pursuit that is AT THE EXPENSE OF THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS OF OTHER PEOPLE AS IT POLLUTES THE AIR THEY BREATH causing irritation to the air ways & eyes, the EPA needs to ban this practice!!
