A MALAYSIAN burglar - who targeted his former workplace and got away with $2 - was sentenced to two years' jail yesterday.
Ansar Anwar (above) was handed the minimum punishment under the law after he had pleaded guilty to housebreaking and theft by night at a Sakae Sushi restaurant here.
Assistant Public Prosecutor Raja Mohan said the 24-year-old used to work at the Bugis Junction eatery as a cleaner from 2007 to 2009.
On June 26 this year, he arrived in Singapore to look for a new job and to borrow money from a friend, but he neither found work nor his friend.
The father of two then decided to break into the restaurant to steal.
The next day, close to midnight, he forced open the rear door of the premises, with the help of an accomplice. He later made off with the cash register.

Why so severe I wonder. Aren't his two kids the mitigating factor.
One fella who broke into my friend's house got seven years.
By that standard, two years is pretty lenient.
The fact that his loot was just $2 is irrelevant. Once you break into someone else's property, you go down hard.
the tax dollars needed to house and feed him is definitely more than $2.
why dont they just jail him for a day and then deport him?
Burglar gets two years jail for breaking and entering, the minimum for such offences. Good already.
I wonder if he want to appeal?
wa sei...$2 equals 2yrs jail...then still $100, life imprisonment alredi lor...
more rattan, less jail time for foreign offenders I say ....
it really doesn't matter a fark to us if we rehabilate them or not ....
12 strokes of the cane, then deport him .... cheaper than way ....
Jail for a day and then deport him would make more sense than putting a desperate breadwinner of the family into jail for 2 years. First, it's a waste of tax money. Second, even if 2 years is considered lenient but the law is fixed by ancient history. We humans can be flexible and be compassionate. Not everyone who commits theft is bad.
If I am shit poor and I have 3 mouths to feed at home, to clothe and educate them, can't find employment and my savings are up, owe people tons of debt and knowing how strict the law is in Singapore and I still commit theft, then I must be freaking desperate.
He targeted the wrong creature or just plain unlucky for loot drop =$2...
Haiz
wad happen to his chlidren

you 愤世忌俗?
$2, $200, $2000, ..or 2 million is also housebreaking. Singapore is considered very civilized, in other country, they will chop off the hands.
taxpayers' money will be feeding him for 2 yrs.
but srsly. $2??
All see the $2, but srsly the last sentence in the report said he made of with the cash register.
Newspaper can also write "Man to hang for robbing $2". Kill to rob, will get death sentence, even if only $2 is taken, and the killer has 10 hungry children and the wife has cancer, and the mother bedridden.
You're using a PC, read as a modern intelligent human, not as a sua ku.
I am currently staying in Canada, believe me, I do miss the stability of Singapore.
I pride myself of being a Singaporean, for our strictness, and the safety/ security of our country. However, when I think deeper, somehow, i felt that we can be more graceful, and give that poor chap a second chance.
Anyway, i may be wrong.
People around here, are savvy of whats going around.
Let off with days jail because of hungry kids.
Burglars would start think: I am jobless, I have two hungry kids, My wife is sick. Bingo, I qualify for a break-in.
Believe me, people here are quick.
