The problem here is 'who' and 'when' the word is used. Tom, dick or harry using the word at a coffeeshop, no one cares. If lee hsien loong uses it on rally speech, confirm hit the headlines far far across the world.
It is a convocation for graduates. Who are the people complaining? Are they involved in the convocation?
this is waaay better than i dunno wad to say
No one post
Its an honest mistake.
Lets move on.
Is it because... it is?
Student who used F-word in speech: She showed her audience no respect
23-year-old NTU student Trinetta Chong ruffled feathers when she ended her valedictorian speech with the phrase 'we f***ing did it'. STOMPer Matthew feels her use of the word shows a lack of respect for her audience.
Following
the incident, a video recording of her convocation speech had gone
viral online, prompting Trinetta to issue an apology for her use of the
word.
A report in today''s The New Paper carried the opinions of
sociologists and linguists about how the word had gone mainstream and
was no longer deemed offensive by people 'in the West'.
STOMPer Matthew, however, feels there is an appropriate time and place for everything. He explained his point of view:
"In today's copy of The New Paper there is a two-page write up on Ms Trinetta Chong's use of the F-word in her valedictorian speech.
"A lot is said by linguistic experts and sociology professors about how
language or the meaning of words have evolved along with their usage but
throughout the entire article 'r-e-s-p-e-c-t' is never even mentioned.
"I
am no prude and admit that I use the F-word also but there is a time
and place for everything. I would never use the F-word when addressing
an audience because it just might be disrespectful to some people.
"By restraining myself from using certain words I am being respectful to others."
i can see some t-shirts being made about this...
Oh come on, this is so two-weeks-ago. When will people stop harping on it?
