NANYANG Technological University said yesterday it regretted the inappropriate choice of words by its valedictorian during her speech at its graduation ceremony last Friday.
Ms Trinetta Chong, 23, who graduated from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, used the F-word after delivering a rousing speech on behalf of her cohort that had the auditorium cheering. She then congratulated her peers and added: 'We f***ing did it!'
According to those at the ceremony, the remark shocked many in the hall, although it also drew applause from sections of the crowd - which included parents, deans and professors.
A video clip of her speech has since been uploaded on YouTube, where it has attracted a mix of comments. Some have condemned her use of the expletive, while others have lauded her boldness.
In a statement last night, an NTU spokesman said Ms Chong's inappropriate choice of words was regrettable.
However, the statement added that 'graduands at Ceremony 14 were in extremely high spirits on Friday evening'.

Fuck is a word found in the Oxford dictionary. Yes, it may be a vulgar slip of the tongue but I don't think she should be faulted too much for that.

When I was growing up, I knew it as Friendly, Understanding, Caring and Kind. Then I got wind of this urban legend: there was a period of time in medieval England where people required the consent of the king to produce and register their babies. So they'd hang the sign that read "Fornication Under Consent of the King" on their doors. That's how FUCK came about lol.

It probably has more in common with 'ficken' (German) and 'fokken' (Dutch) than a story which doesn't mention which king ruled in that time.
we cant deny it's the most useful word for every kind of expressions and emotions
Isn't she entitled to express her relief at having completed 4 years of undergraduate studies with her peers? This is the end of education for most of them, so what is wrong with the use of one oft-used profanity? We are looking at the end of 16 years of education (6+4+2+4). Strange how so many are acting like kids in a coming-of-age ceremony.
Such a mild use of the word, and everyone is up in arms over this tiny matter.
Ms Trinetta Chong, herself acknowledges the impropriety of her words, and she has explained and apologised for it. End of the matter.
It is not as if she stand by her utterance, and say there is nothing wrong.
Good looking, Intelligent .. I think I'm in love.
