SINGAPORE : The two public transport operators, SBS Transit and SMRT, have submitted applications to the Public Transport Council (PTC) seeking bus and rail fare adjustments.
Both cited cost pressures despite increased efforts to lower costs and increase productivity.
SMRT is asking for the maximum fare adjustment of 2.8 per cent.
This
is based on the annual fare adjustment formula that takes into account
the consumer price index (CPI), wage index and productivity gains.
It said the cost pressures were mainly from escalating energy and manpower costs.
SMRT said its energy cost increased 17.5 per cent to S$122.4 million for the financial year ended March.
SBS Transit said it has been investing in new buses as part of a fleet renewal exercise, which began in 2006.
In
the last year alone, orders were placed for another 600 buses costing
S$268 million, which are scheduled for delivery in 2011 and 2012.
SBS
Transit said more details of the application, which is subject to the
approval of the PTC, will be announced at a later date.

You need to pay them more so that they can look into this issue of overcrowding and being packed like sardines.

By the way, I note that they are asking for "maximum fare adjustment of 2.8%".
So 2.8% is the max they can increase per year? Per review?
Anybody can enlighten me?
So much angst over this small little increment in all the forums I go to.

After the last two increase, there was no service improvement.
There are even cost cutting measures to off the air con on the MRT train.
The train frequency was increased due to pressure of MIWs from election.
So, if the transport companies are not bothered to solve the over-crowding situation, why should the fares be increased ?
Dun need the old man to blackmail us on the companies closing their doors as he dun take the transport himself.
What about Mr Lui who have took the bus and MRT ride himself recently ?
Is he going to be as silent as the previous guy ? (As the previous guy served two terms, he have failed the country and himself for not doing anything)
So, it is still up to the people to make their voices heard again.
anyone rber if anyone promised no fare hikes during election?

I think they only promised no hike in GST.
So they had to look for other places to hike.
Think about it - if they hiked GST, it would probaby have been maybe 2% more.
Now they want to hike transport fares by 2.8%.
Can consider it a worse deal even.
so after minister take the mrt and bus, this is wat we get?
I wonder if many people kpkb about the fare increase just like the hoo ha over the DBSS flat saga recently, they will back down.
After all, public housing and public transportation are both basic necessities.
we will build our own slums and ride our own buffalos.
welcome to the world where money solve problems!
They have high overhead cost like land rentals, COEs, diesel tax and vehicle taxes to cover.
It really makes you wonder doesn't it, the buses and MRTs are packed like sardines, yet they are not making enough.
Maybe they should cut more routes and frequency to improve efficiency, everybody can squeeze harder.
600 buses for S$268 million!!!
S$450,000 for ONE bus?
I wonder how much does a bus in other countries cost?
