INCULCATING values in students will help Singaporeans face the demands of the 21st century - and that is just what the education ministry will focus on moving forward.
Minister for Education Heng Swee Kiat, made this comment to reporters on Sunday after a brisk walk and aerobics session with residents at the Community Sports festival @ North East.
Answering questions on education, Mr Heng stressed the importance of developing 21st century competencies for students.
At the centre of this is educating students about values, so that Singaporeans as a whole will have 'a sense of responsibility, resilience and care for the broader community', he said.
The newly-minted education minister had just returned to Singapore after leading a delegation to Japan in end June to attend an education seminar held by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.
During the seminar, he spoke about Singapore's education system, which he said was highly respected internationally.

How can you teach values at school? Does the teacher stand in front and say to the students - Ok, you are not suppose to talk when your mouth is full. Next, you are suppose to say thank you after someone opens the door for you. What subject would it fall under?
Maybe you can, but i just cannot think of it right now. I thought this kind of things mostly taught by parents/relatives and through growing up?
Government itself also protected its own crownies and interests, what values?
Value of money, yes, morality is just another mask.
Upper beams not straight, lower beams also crooked.

You listed behaviours, not values. Values are 'Respect for your elders, Honesty, Integrity' etc.
for a nation without interest in history, what is value?
