THE current ratio of one foreign worker to two Singaporeans is optimal and this has to be kept under firm control, even as employers complain that it is difficult to find enough staff, said Mr Yeo Guat Kwang, director for Quality Worklife and All Nationalities at the National Trades Union Congress.
He added that it was the duty of companies to work within this ratio and redesign jobs to make them more productive, and to attract Singaporeans to take them on. 'From the labour movement we are working to help these bosses to see how we can put in measures to push up the productivity,' he said.
'That's important because if we don't make the job a better one, fewer and fewer Singaporeans will be willing to do them.'
He was responding to questions from The Straits Times last night about recent media reports that companies have had to turn away business because of the lack of manpower.
Mr Yeo, who is also chairman of the Migrant Workers Centre (MWC), which helps foreign workers settle workplace disputes, was speaking on the sidelines of a roadshow at Tampines Dormitory.
He added that the 1.05 million foreign workers here make up close to one-third of Singapore's total workforce.

Are they sure the current ratio is 1 foreign worker to 2 singaporeans workers?

They are saying they did not do anything wrong and the process is fine, no change needed, Permanent Residents are also included in the Singaporean ratio.
What's new?
The usual denial and deceit.
elections over so they are now free to increase the number of foreign workers as much as they want to
Why he thinks is the job and not the pay problem ? Why does he expect a local Singaporean to work for $1000 a month in this kind of job capacity.
The fastest way to solve no one want to take up the job problem is INCREASE THE SALARY !!!
You offer $1500 for a road sweeper, you will see long Q waiting to work.
Lol.....last time i remembered they said foreign workers only take up jobs that singaporeans rejected.
How they determine the optimality of 1 Foreign Worker to 2 Singapore Workers?
I think the more appropriate ratio should be closer to 1 Foreign Worker to 4 Singapore Workers.
Why?
Add up all the total population of labourers, cleaners, plant operators and production craftmans.

Foreigners should not be easily employed into jobs easily taken up by Singaporeans, Singaporeans should be the number one priority in jobs and not treated like second class citizens compared to foreigners.
Right now resident labour force is 1.87 million while non-resident labour force is 1.04 million. Even by their ratios, the non-resident labour force is too high, either reduce the non-resident labour force or increase the resident labour force.
***Resident labour force does not mean citizens, it just means they have residence status in Singapore.

Hanor.
People always say nobody wants the job, but if you apply the ministers' principle of paying high to attract talents or to prevent corruption, surely there will be many takers for the job.
$1000 not enough to get workers? Offer $5000.
Supposed this same concept is applied to the parliament. Out of 3 MPs, 1 is a FT and 2 are locals.Does it workout? How come the parliament does not need FTs?
1 foreign worker to 2 Singaporean is still a lot. 1 foreign worker to 10 singaporean is a better quota.
why do employers keep complaining they cant find local workers?
if true then where did they all go to? they have to work to put food on the table right? hence, they have to work somewhere right? all sitting at coffee shops?

Sitting at kopitiams and watching Ai every day.
Remember, 15% of Singaporeans are millionaires.
