IT IS worth waking up to catch this rare phenomenon - a blood red moon from 3.25am to 5am tomorrow.
This event is known as a total lunar eclipse where the Moon is completely in the Earth's shadow.
Because the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, only red light from the Sun is able to reach the Moon's surface.
The blood moon can be seen by the naked eye and does not require telescopes. For a few hours, other planets such as Saturn, Venus, Jupiter and Mars will also be visible.
This total lunar eclipse is especially rare for Singaporeans because the entire process of the Moon being covered and uncovered by the Earth's shadow will be visible here.
The last such eclipse was in 2004 and the next will be in 2018. To see the process, Singaporeans must have a clear view of the sky in the west.

MORE than 700 people gathered on Wednesday night at the Science Centre Singapore in Jurong to look at a blood-red moon.
Although it was supposed to appear only at 3.25am this morning, people started arriving at 11pm.
The event, known as a total lunar eclipse, was to have lasted til 5am. It was the longest total lunar eclipse in a decade.
The Moon was red because it was completely in the Earth's shadow. As a result, only red light from the Sun was able to reach the Moon's surface.
The blood moon could be seen by the naked eye and telescopes were not needed.
The last such eclipse was in 2004, and the next will be in 2018.
