SMRT has offered the Thai teen who lost both her legs in an MRT accident here a compensation of $5,000. However, 14-year-old's father has rejected the amount as it is 'unacceptable'.
On April 3, Peneakchanasak Nitcharee pitched forward onto the MRT tracks at Ang Mo Kio station. Since then, she has recovered well in Tan Tock Seng Hospital and has been undergoing physiotherapy.
According to a report in The Straits Times today (June 12), Mr Peneakchanasak engaged a lawyer last week to look into getting higher compensation from SMRT. It had offered $5,000, which he has rejected.
"Unacceptable. This is for a person, a little girl -- a little girl who had a bad accident. From today onwards, there will be more expenses, like the cost of her new legs and rehabilitation," Nitcharee's upset father told the press.
The Thai student will be heading home on Monday (June 13). Her wounds have healed fully, and she now moves around in her new electric wheelchair, bought with donations from the Singapore Rotary e-Club.
Said STOMPer christopher of the compensation offered:
"It is greatly disappointing that SMRT offered such a low and absurb amount of $5k to the Thai teen.
"Surely, we can do better than that.
"The $5k cannot even cover basic costs.
"Please be more humane."
5k? what on earth is SMRT or that SMRT CEO Saw Phaik Hua is thinking?
actually I think 5k is ok.
Its the girl who ownself fall into the mrt track and not the fault of smrt
SMRT fails to install the platform doors to prevent people from falling or committing sucides isnt it.
the decent thing SMRT should do is to offer 50k to the family.
I am fedup with SMRT. the peak hour air con is almost non existent. I remembered riding a train with me sweating inside in peak hour in the morning. I remembered taking out a hanky to wipe away my sweat once I reach my destination, which is almost 30 mins of train ride. did SMRT forgot to switch on the air con?
so after they install the platform doors, people climb over it to commit suicide how?
smrt also must pay them?
like that 1 day I got no money I also jump down at smrt and let them pay my family members after I am dead lor
If nobody's fault, then why are they even paying?
do u know that when people committed suicide and die, their insurance policies does not pay their next of kin. so similarly if people commit suicides at mrt despite the platform doors, you think SMRT will pay their family money?
hope this news does not reach thailand.... if not......... i think we will have alot more FT coming from there suddenly and taking MRT>...

some insurance policies will pay if you commit suicide after buying the insurance for more than 1 year.

I think some insurance policies won't pay out for suicide cases if it is within 2 years of first buying the policy.
After the 2 year period, I think they will.

Yes, 1 or 2 years depending on the policy.

The above ground stations along the north south line have been around since 1987, and they didn't even start putting those half farked platform doors since last year, so since 1987 till 2010, how many people have lost their legs waiting for an MRT train in an above ground MRT station? To be frank with you, I've been around even before then, and this is the first time I come across one person who lost her legs. The schoolboy who broke his at bishan MRT admitted it was his fault coz of his horseplay.
It was reported this girl wasn't feeling well, and fainted into the path of an incoming train. I ask you who in their right mind who isn't feeling well be standing just before the yellow line so in case they faint, they fall right into the farking path of an incoming train?
SMRT shouldn't even give a damn cent of compensation IMHO.

Please think before puting such statement. Do u know that commiting suicide is a crime. Commiting suicide and caused delay to publicb transport, SMRT should sue his estate for thei loss.
Did not erect barricade or platform door and caused accident resulting such injury, SMRT should be liable for the victim loss and compensate the victim accordingly. Amount is best determine by Singapore court.
SMRT offered the 5k as a token of goodwill.
If a Singaporean should have such a freak accident in Thailand, you think the Thai will send well wishes, donations and even gave a new wheelchair to the victim?
Agreed.
If the reports are true, then the $5K (should be more) was probably more of a gesture of goodwill. I don't know the in's/out's of the legal side of things, but not paying a cent is cold.
No amount of money can compensate for a leg.

use some common sense lah.
the thai girl lost her legs to a fall. a suicide is intentional. a fall isnt. thats the difference!!!! you compensate for accidents but not suicide.
