SINGAPORE: Singapore's Southwest District has seen a 24.8 per cent increase in dengue cases in the first four months of this year as of April 30, 2011.
There were 166 cases, compared with 133 cases for the same period last year.
The number of dengue clusters has also doubled from four to eight, compared with the same period last year.
Mayor
of the district Dr Amy Khor said this is a cause for concern,
especially when the number of cases for Singapore as a whole has been
falling.
"What we are worried about is that people may become
complacent - that they do not maintain vigilance. And this is one of the
reasons why every year we'll launch 'Operation Mozzie-free' within the
district," said Dr Khor.
Dr Khor said one new dengue prevention programme in the district is the 'Mozzie Free Gardens at Southwest' programme.
Residents will act as "garden sheriffs" to make sure the community gardens are free of potential mosquito breeding sites.
They'll
share dengue prevention tips with residents who use the 42 community
gardens in the district, which covers estates such as Bukit Batok,
Jurong and Chua Chu Kang,.
"We are encouraging the community to
set up community gardens because that's really one way of bonding the
people together, but with that is an added risk that there could be
mosquito breeding that could lead to dengue," said Dr Khor.
