ABOUT half of Singaporeans polled last year by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) were of the view that 'there is too much government control of newspapers and television'.
Younger respondents aged 21 to 39 years old agreed with the statement in larger numbers - over six in 10 - as compared to five in 10 of those aged over 60.
About 49 per cent of those aged below 60 agreed with the statement that 'newspapers and television are biased when they report on Singapore politics, political parties and elections', slightly higher than the 42 per cent among those aged 60 and above.
Despite these reservations, respondents still revealed above-average trust in newspapers, TV and radio. Asked to measure the trustworthiness of media channels as outlets for political news from a scale of 1 (untrustworthy) to 5 (very trustworthy), newspapers received 3.58 on average, the highest.
TV received a 3.55 score, while the Internet received 2.82 on average. Younger respondents were slightly more inclined to see the Internet as trustworthy. Mr Wong Liangyuan, 25, an undergraduate, describes himself as 'equally cynical and wary' of both mainstream and online media.
The mainstream media may display a bias towards the incumbent People's Action Party, but online sources display one towards opposition parties, he said. Hence, when consuming news online, he focuses on the facts and figures.

to add on....overemphasis of feminism and women related stuffs...seldom praises heard for the guys...for all that you have defended the materialistic and selfish society
Not all who subscribe to ST are staunch believers in its impartiality....or rather, the lack of. How many of the younger gen buy this rag?
besides reviewing on ministers' pay, they would need to radically change how the media works to broadcast all sections of the society...an independent panel of experts with balanced views should study the sg medias...with key emphasis on balanced gender perception and development....
if they cannot change and continue to monopolize...its time to pressure them by allowing more competitive external medias to take them to task....
if they continue to "punish" their own males, how could the guys give their support whole heartedly? how could the guys feel good helping the govt to resolve women issues - for whom they are bitten in the end?
well...since we all love everything first class...let's have a
FIRST CLASS MEDIA
See, even Irene Ng agrees.

Biased?
Nonsense.
They give you the choice of liking the incumbent or disliking the alternatives.
we need to break up one by one the tightly structured bureaucracy and impose independent enquiry with public involvement to re-design it our own way than just leave it to a handful of ivory tower academicians
the medias have downplayed the contributions of men...and overemphasized women issues....
they are responsible for the misperception of the genders ...
this has to be radically changed....
