DBS Chairman Peter Seah, 64, has a successful 34-year career in banking but he firmly believes that failure is an important step in achieving success.
'Failures and setbacks are opportunities where you learn to do things better, where you toughen up,' he explained.
Mr Seah was sharing his personal and professional experiences with a group of students and old boys of Saint Joseph's Institution at the Fullerton-SJI leadership lecture series held at the Fullerton Hotel on Friday. He graduated from SJI in 1964 and still stays in touch with his classmates.
During his career, Mr Seah also learnt the importance of organisational culture when he moved from American bank, Citibank to the family-owned Asian bank, OUB. He said it takes time to implement change and suggested bringing in 'change agents' such as like-minded individuals into the team.
Mr Seah's leadership style is one where he believes in being a well-liked leader, rather than a leader who is feared. With his wealth of knowledge, Mr Seah sees himself as a mentor to young leaders in the banking sector.

Lofty statements- I would love to work there, except working conditions are jia lat.
mocking at lky.
so what failures did Peter Seah suffer ?
or is he another one making motherhood statement?
Rich people have their own category of setbacks. Some lose millions, some lose properties....some make money losing decisions. Nevertheless, still setbacks.
Yes I agreed that failure is a learning stages of life to move on.
But in reality, if you fail to perform, you are out of the company.
in actual fact, did Peter Seah suffer failure? if yes, what failure did he suffer?
That's just one of his failures. Every successful chap out there has made failures all his life. It sucks when you think you have contributed and expecting the step up, it didn't come. Luckily he persisted and he became the DBS chairman.
Persistence matters.
The boss fail, and that is a learning experience.
The employee fail, and he is incompetent.
It is not failure in itself that is important.
It is the ability to learn from your failures that is truly important.
No pain no gain
setbacks are important but FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION !!!!
