TRADE and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang has urged Singaporeans to understand the need for foreign workers, cautioning that Singapore will have to turn away big investments if it is not flexible on this issue.
He said the government plans to cap the proportion of foreigners at one-third of the workforce over the next decade, but this limit will constrain Singapore's economic growth.
He was speaking to reporters after a walkabout at Boon Lay market and hawker centre with his fellow PAP candidates for West Coast GRC - Mr S Iswaran, Mr Arthur Fong, Mr Lawrence Wong and Ms Foo Mee Har.
'We will keep foreign workers to one-third of the workforce but I can tell you that one-third of the workforce is a very severe limitation to us,' he said.
'I have to be very selective now and take in investments that don't bust that constraint.'
Mr Lim said in 2006 and 2007, when Singapore took in a 'bumper crop' of investments from multinationals such as energy giants Shell and Exxon-Mobil, which required more foreign workers, the economy expanded by about 7 per cent, he noted.
But with the current limits on foreign worker numbers, Singapore will have to aim for lower growth of 3 to 5 per cent, he said.

they are just lazy to do the footwork. its gonna be tought but someone has to do it. there are crackc in the fplicy foundation. we voters are not asking themt o scarp it, but patch the gaps so that the roof sheltering people fron a heavy downpour can function properly and fully. its a pain in the ass when i take shelter in a rainy day and find that part of the roof's leaking pussy juices.

Did wages increase for Singapore workers or PAP minister pay increase?

i wonder why oppiostions never lash out at the pap ministers wages in a more 'constructive' manner.
their consolidated monthly pay and other welfares, if added and trasnfered to reserves or welfare funds, can help many mnay poor sgreans on the fllor. and i mean saving them aside every month , a monthly supplement for the really poor sgreans. if they do that, i rather forgo all the growth packagage and handouts given to me.

Money hungry PAP ministers who pegged slary to GDP growth.
pegg to 1/3 third of the workforce ? but now 2.3millions can vote (including new citizens) and there is a population of 5 millions in Singapore. Singaporeans are 1 to 1 ratio to the foreigners. They are going to increase to 7 millions. That will be 4.7 millions foreigners in Singapore.
How to peg to 1/3 ?
In my company, foreigner workers are senior engineer, consultants and managers. The foreigners will hange around, slowly they will become directors, CEOs.
They might be on Work permit thing but they can apply for PR, their pay is high and their post have a nice ring to it. Very easy for them, if not approve can try again.
Some will also venture into business, their country men are already here, a critical mass enough to support their business.
Their fighting spirit cannot be underestimated, they might be a bit slow in understanding things inititally but they will latch on.
Don't underestinmate them. The top 50% of Sinkapore are severely underestimating them. The top 50% are more concerned about their own momentary property and living in lala land.
Don't under estimate them.
Vote for opposition, the foreigner issue is severely under-estimated.
Foreigners have dragged down the 30 to 40% of the wages in SInkpapore depending on what set of statistics are used.
It will drag the next higher 10 to 20% when the 900,000 foreigners appear.
Companies have already seen how nice their cost cutting measure are coming, they will be sharpening their knives on the next bunch of higher positioned staff.
Anyone works at raffles place? heard the place is infested with filipinos now. I mean white collared workers.
The best way to settle this issue is after the GE, Send all foreign workers, ALL, every single one of them, leaving only Singaporeans to work. And then see the situation.
Not hard for you to imagine what the situation will be like.
900,000 foreign workers on the average levy of $400 each = $360,000,000 per month.
are u asking them to reduce foreign workers?
We need proper control, not PAP control.
So many Singaporeans unemployed, let Singaporeans be 100% employed first before employing foreigners.
PAP cannot ensure 100% employment for Singaporeans yet claim that it will crimp growth.
Makes no sense while Singaporeans are unemployed while foreign talents take up all these jobs supposed to be for Singaporeans.
