In a report by The New Paper on Saturday, that Mr Spencer Ng Chung Hon, one of the National Solidarity Party’s (NSP) candidates in Marine Parade GRC, had been accused of having behaved inappropriately towards a student in 2007 when he was a teacher.
Asked about the accusation, he said: “With this new generation, we need to explore new methods of engaging them, like using SMSes, online chatting and connecting with them on Facebook.”
Several teachers here have also been criticised previously for inappropriate comments made of their students online or on their Facebook accounts.
Recently, teachers in the UK and Australia have been issued guidelines on befriending students on Facebook. What about in Singapore?
Read the full report in The New Paper on Sunday (1 May).
Y cannot
*poke*
good question
The line should be clear.
Personally won't wanna add my teachers as friends while I'm under their charge of course. Why would I allow them to see my grouses/thoughts that are meant for friends? Well, unless your teachers happen to be your friend..
Facebook - redefining friends..
Teachers cant use facebook. They cant use Hp, cant have sex, cant wear slippers. cant eat in hawker centers. Seriously give teachers a break. Stupid reporter

lol lol lol :d
gutter politics...why report on such a long time incident?
This is a type of "gay" teacher who act young and makes me wanna puke.
I have come across such teachers.
Even now after I am getting older, I join a Facebook page which is a group page for my school class, and we are typing messages and being nostalgic to each other, and BOOM, a teacher join in uninvited.
These types of uninvited teachers who are obtrusive and over-friendly, really do not know their proper place.
when social media becomes a betrayal tool as much as you wished it to be friendly and warming harbour...
i have always objected displaying private matters...the world isn't that friendly....
always draw a great line between what could be shared and what MUST NOT...
this goes to teachers and students and all the likes
not only between teachers and students, but also with the watchful eyes of employers and their employees
I am a teacher myself, we have a life as well. I feel there is nothing wrong with students adding teachers in FB or other social network websites or vice versa as long both parties conduct well.
Hello people, its the 21st century, don't be so narrow-minded, Veggie Bao especially.

Do you poke your students regularly to remind them of their assignments?
Do your students poke you everyday for the fun of it ?
Just curious...
i say teachers should be teachers and friends should be friends. there is no need to raise the question about teachers can or cannot be friends with student. some things in this world no need an answer, some really don;t need a definite answers. in time it will tell
The testimonies of his former students justify him.

U talk as if you are damm ''man''. Give me a break.
And what ? teachers are banned in facebook ? Oh great
And whats their proper place ? Being moral gods and living up to moral standards set by ppl like you ? Oh yes !!
I think it's fine if they're friends as long as they remember where the line is and abide by it e.g. if you know that you have students on your Friends list then don't post things that may appear unbecoming of a teacher, or have a separate account.
Same thing if you're gonna add your boss and colleagues.
There should be a clear demarcation between your personal life and work life.
.
its took the singapore press abt 4yrs to discover this case and it had to be publish just b4 the GE? hmmmmm....
