SINGAPORE: President S R Nathan has reiterated the importance of accepting new arrivals and foreign workers, and appreciating the contributions they bring.
He was asked for his views on the current debate over policies on foreign workers being raised by various political parties.
He was speaking at an Indian community event organised by Narpani and SINDA.
President
Nathan said: "New arrivals and foreign workers may cause discomfort
because of our unfamiliarity with their diverse accents and habits, but
we must not forget how they have made our lives better.
"We must
appreciate the contributions of these foreigners and new citizens, and
welcome them into our midst, as our ancestors were welcomed in days gone
by."

LoL...
Foreign workers who are doing jobs that Singaporeans don't want to do, I welcome.
Foreign "talents" who come as PMETs or higher posts and steal jobs from Singaporeans, I do not welcome.
He better start doing his job to check the reserves and do not get involved in the state affairs now.
He is just sprouting rubbish like the rest of the croonies.
Ask him to take a bus or MRT during the weekend before he start being a parrot.
well the gahmen paid him millions
he has to say something for them in return right
lolz
Good that his term will ends in 4 months time.
Yes we do need to acknowledge that spore will have foreigners working in spore. But not overly rely on foreigners that causes jobs lost to them in terms of low salary/wage they can work.
We do need foreigne investors operating their office here in Spore. That can bring jobs to the locals.
wow, wat a PAP DOG
the time for him to open up his fat mouth n he didnt, the time for him not to open his fat mouth n he did

I dont think he knows.
though it's a harsh fact tat jobs like bus drivers would still be filled by a foreigners, but not to the entire jobs profile in Singapore.
Sometimes we've foreigners isn't good. They dun understand the special needs of the country's profile whenever things are planned.
Dun anyone remembered the building of MRT & Airport was done by ourselves? But sadly, we dun really have e kind of ppl as like the yester years
Some jobs really need foreigners. Without them, we cannot progress.
But others jobs should be left to Sporean. Just want to have cheap and cheap and cheap foreigners can kill sporean off esaily especially cost of living is high.
govt has to stop thinking they want to get contracts done at e cheapest possible rate as well
some elements like how they intend to complete e task should be a pre-req as part of e tender
he's going to open the largest mama shop and prata shop to compete with shengshiong...
mama shop + prata shop
is better than
IKEA + meatballs

If the bus company will raise the starting salary of BCs, more Singaporeans will sign up.
You already said BCs job is very tiring and tough, so why shouldn't they be paid more?
If starting pay of a BC is $3,000- $4,000, you will see the queue forming at SLDEP and HODEP.
How come now the bus companies are setting a low wage that is not high enough to entice locals to drive and looking for foreigners instead who will accept the wage level that they set?
we need to be more appreciative and welcoming to alternative views and oppositions...that is, the sustainable way is towards PARTICIPATIVE POLITICS ...
its no longer the "One-for-all, and All-for-one" political dictum and heydays

$3000 pay
Say 6000 bus drivers. Tat means each day on avg wages cost $600,000. I believe SBS's avg fare is abt 80c. So tat means need 750,000 commuters to cover tis cost. Tat's just bus driver alone. 30% of the overheads
Wat abt fuel, maintenance?
We just have to do without so many foreigners, this is getting ridiculous, there's going to be no more country left, if we still allow rich men to run amok here.

You worry more about BC's welfare or transport company's profits ?

A double decker bus cost some $520k (Say SBS takes in 50% double deck, 50% single decker fleet) if ppl want more double decks... It will cost them $780m for the double decks, $525m for e single decks. It cost a total of $1.305bn.
Take 10 yrs to finace them it cost $357,000 a day w/o considering e loan. It's another some 450,000 commuter's fare money.
750k + 450k = 1.2m pax.
I still have not counted maintenance cost n interest yet.
And still need to maintain e fare.
Which singaporean don't want a high paying job, no stress, and sit in office blow aircon all day?

"30 Apr 2010 ... Transport operator SMRT said its full year profit inched up 0.1 per cent to about S$163 million"
"11 Feb 2011 .... SBS Transit has posted a 0.6 per cent drop in its full-year net profit to S$54.2 million." ~ CNA
these are obscene profits made by supressing the wages of their employees.
