the best self defense is no defense at all...sounds cheem ya? the best thing you can do is run! once you are surrounded, start formulating an escapre route and then run! you wont want to risk yourself getting injured fighting with the other party especially if you are outnumbered.

sometimes no choice cannot run
take for example the realistic use of aikido
someone does a reverse bearhug
if dunno self-defence how? onli can shout. bcos dunno self-defence, can't escape cos being hugged tightly
if know aikido, can easily apply technique first (http://www.expertvillage.com/video/126068_aikido-bear-hug-self-defense.htm)
then run away lor
i'm torn between krav maga and wing chun
For grapplers,I would recommend Jujutsu over Judo anytime.
i ish still like jeet kune do
having no limitation as limitation, using no way as way

Basically, your ninja training is limited unless you have been taken in as an in-house disciple.

There is no best self defense/martial arts. All has its pro and cons.
Like the Ip-man movie, is depend on the person who use it. If u r good at it, u can kick the ppl A*S.
In street fight, mix martial art is the best.
Anyway, if u r surrounded the best thing is to run.
try krav maga!!

hmm, what's the diff between MMA and other martial arts.
i've always thought that MMA is more of a sport rather than martial art

If your gf or mother with you, then no choice got to fight lor.
Of course you still can run, but then...
Got weapon, use weapon. 1 v1 u shouldn't even bother fighting, just run. If you get cornered, use whatever advantage you can find... chairs, tables, bottles etc.
Learn Krav Maga, forget all the Bruce Lee nun-chuck-ku shite, this will teach you how to survive the streets.

Bas Rutten's Lethal Self-Defense System
=D
he incorporates krav maga. but all street fight scenario
I took Akido, Tae Kwon Do, Judo and Kickboxing... I found Akido + Judo = deadly :P works almost everytime.
Also, alot of people say TKD useless because it majors in kicks... not true, we learn street fight which at most include only a low kick, only very few uses high kicks, even if it does, it would knock out the opponent already, so yes, kicks are deadly, very deadly, still, street fight in most martial arts only teach to handle one opponent at a time.
For Wing Chun, you must train like a crazy to do what they did in the movies, if not, you will be surprise at what you can't do.
Also, for Krav Maga, don't train by yourself, unless you want to be hospitalised.
And yes, flight is the best fighting technique, Parkour FTW! (Anyone have any idea where to learn Parkour in Singapore?)
Lastly, just curious, why no one recommend Zhong Hua Wu Shu? Is it that useless?

Self taught or got instructor? I duwan self taught de XD
For wat i think every martial art have it best move. It up to the individual to use it. Practical or not it up to the experience fighter to know. When come to street fight, your life usually at stake. it usually up to that very risk moment that u really will show out your potential. For Judo or jujistu, It does not really need any gei in street fight, everyone will wears clothing. Grabing of the shirt or hand or leg will also do the move . For karate, experience fighter will use a few good low kick/punch to disable an oppoent, which in this case same for a boxer.

True... you got learn martial art de?
conclusion: for a well rounded self defence module i recommend that
1. take up two contrasting disciplines; ie. power / grappling ( taekwondo / judo )
2. Hit the gym to make sure that u can outrun your pursuers once you manage to break out of them
3. try to stay out of trouble in the first place
Had learn before full contact karate.
