  Ah Seng proposed to young Ah Huay, and he was being interviewed by Lau Kok Kok, his prospective father-in-law.

  "Do you think you are earning enough to support a family?" the older man asked Ah Seng the aspiring suitor.

  "Yes, Boss!," replied Ah Seng, "I'm sure that I am."

  "Think long and carefully now," said Ah Huay's father. "There are twelve of us...including my uncle Lau Ah Pek."
