the fashion mags, on the other hand, shows fashion designed for the Caucasians skin in the temperate weather -

Hmm. I find checks a bit difficult to match, especially since I'm not the tweed sort. Nope, not flimsy at all. It's nice and cool with a nice smooth texture. I'd say you should be able to get an Egyptian cottom shirt made for about $40.
