Kobe beef is beef from a Wagyu which means a Japanese cow. It is renowned for its flavor, tenderness, and fatty well-marbled texture. These qualities are a result of their excellent genetic characterisics. Cows of the same breed are raised this way in Japan, Idaho, Texas, California, Virginia, and Australia, but can only be called Kobe beef if slaughtered in Kobe, Japan.
Kobe Beef cattle are hand massaged. Cattle in Japan have little room to exercise, and this can cause soreness in their muscles which reduces their appetite. This lower stress level in addition to constant massage keeps the muscles tender. During the summer the cows eat less because of extra fat stored during the winter. At this time, the cows are fed beer which increases their appetites and helps them maintain a higher, more desirable level of fat.
Because true Kobe beef is not exported from Japan, "Kobe style" beef is produced from a crossbreed of Wagyu and American Angus cattle raised and slaughtered in the U.S. Of these cattle, the highest quality cows are sent to Japan, who still owns the rights to the cows, and the U.S. keeps what is left.
Kobe beef can be prepared as steak, sukiyaki, shabu shabu, teppanyaki, and more. -
and to think most other people slice off the fat
notice the meat is nicely marbled with fat?
people do not know that fat is what makes meat tender.. and is integral in making meat taste good -
yeah i heard this over 93.3fm some tym ago and i'm looking forward to trying this fabulous meat one day. too bad there isnt many places that really sells the genuine kobe beef. most would claim it is but isnt the real thing, juz conning people out there.

There is actually a difference being the important part will be that the cow is raised in kobe itself by those specialist in raising wagyu cattle.Only then will the beef be of kobe certified quality.Wagyu cattle have being sold to other place esp US and breed there but in none of these places are the breeding as good as kobe and the resulting quality aka marbling quality is often way lower,if i did not remember wrongly when i did some reading up on this,the best wagyu beef that come from elsewhere when imported into japan can only meet max grade 5-6 for marbling quality but top grade kobe beef will be like grade 12-13 (higher the grade,higher the quality) and the difference in quality is very great and thus the very high price premium for true kobe beef.Originally posted by eg6stanley:no diff. i take half a week (and several complaints from my elder sis) before i manage to finish off one slice of cake. but that's only an extreme case. lol.

Aside... Awon Korean Restaurant at Peninsula is priced really low on weekdays and with credit card promotion. Decent food at good price.
I've tasted Kobe & Wagyu, ironically I didn't really enjoy them. Too soft and no bite, too fatty for my liking. Also odd that I get jelat after half a steak (too fatty lah). Maybe the Japanese were on to something judging by the restrained beef consumption LOL Me, I like my huge steaks and prime rib. -
actually, i've tried korean food. must say i've not enjoyed it as much as japanese food..

Korean food is not really my cup of tea either. Very standard stuff, sweet marinated meats and BBQ... now and then I get in the mood for kimchi.

I have eaten life lobster before at a jap cafe. didn't know it still alive, was happier eating it when i saw that it claws are still moving. At first thought that i was seeing the wrong things, so i guess my gf to confirm it and turn out she too say it moving. It eyes is also moving too
Go confrim with my mum and she say it allright what, cause we are eating it raw. -_-"". After that i go play with it, till it die..
Dunno how come those jap could bear to eat all this -

Frankly it feels like sashimi when raw. I had it once at this Jap restrauant. (Not Cheap) it's prepared raw with some onions and sauce. Feels like sashimi, the texture except the Shashimi has more fishy taste.
