The Restroom Association of Singapore has released a three-year blueprint which seeks to bring 70 per cent of Singapore's 30,000 public toilets to its 3-star standard.
This means the toilets are odour as well as litter-free, have working facilities and provided with amenities like toilet paper and soap.
Only 30 to 40 per cent of the public toilets meet this standard today.
The 70-page blueprint, compiled by an Inter-Agency Working Committee,
also highlighted challenges faced by toilet operators, cleaners and
users.
Findings show that a cost-effective way of restroom cleaning is needed
as smaller operators like coffeeshops are resistant to hiring trained
restroom cleaners due to high costs.
Suggestions include shared cleaning services and charges for restroom visits.
Other challenges include a lack of performance standards and recognition for cleaners.
There is also a need for better restroom design such as lightings and brighter colors to improve user behavior.
A revamp of education programmes is also needed to change ungracious behavior like vandalism and poor restroom etiquette.
With this in mind, RAS has launched its first LOO@heartlands campaign at
a coffeeshop in Tampines which has earned a 5-star rating.
The campaign will see pocket tissue packets with restroom etiquette
messages distributed to toilet visitors at food and beverage outlets.
