u need good lang foundation to be able to read and write literature
culture will encompass lang and lit oredi but other things tt are taught through upbringing, the environment and the people around u
in singapore, chinese is just a subject in school.....
this mindset is difficult to change...
there are chinese who hates chinese becos they always get D7....totally ignoring the fact that it's their root....
the main problem does not lie with the teaching method or the syllabus but the learning attitude.....
looking around u, we do have channels to allow us to connect to our culture but how many ppl are actually aware of or bother to participate?
you are right in a sense dat:
u need good chinese language foundation to excel in chinese literature, because chinese literature is carved in a way dat u really need a lot of ideas and be good in your writing in order to understand it. In singapore, chinese literature are not taught unless u take chinese A or higher chinese in junior colleges or millienia institute, as most of the time, AO chinese, N level chinese, O level normal chinese and O level higher chinese only teaches you and emphasize on the building of foundation of languages.
however, can we blame pple's attitude towards chinese?...though government has recently juz adjusted its policy towards taking higher chinese in secondary sch and more emphasis on and changing of different methods of learning of chinese, however, our society is such that a lot of pple still cant grasp the language well...pple tend to tink dat english is more important as it is a medium language used to teach everything like maths science humanitites....ask urself this qns: do u reallie nid to excel in both languages in order to survive in singapore??....obviously not!...in fact if u r a chinese idiot u still can get a job and live well!.....
why we chinese hav to learn chinese?...u talk abt roots, talk abt culture, but my ans to this qns is dat how pple from china n taiwan n hong kong view u as. Singapore is the only country outside china n taiwan which has the most population made up of chinese. Where did our ancestor come from? there is only one answer and it is obvious.
tink abt it, if i tell you that singapore sec1's chinese standard is only equivalent to malaysia's pri4's chinese, wad do you tink?
and also the fact that many of my frenz who are reallie hardcore hatefans of chinese during their sec sch days now find demselves regretting for not studying hard enough for chinese........
