When you say
because of pin placement, I'm guessing it's relatively far from the CG? The most straight-forward way would be to place the pin offset to the sides of the finger inserts, above the CG line.
(This sounds really sketchy, I know. But I can't remember what this position is known as. Like I said - I've been gone a looooong time)

I'm trying to draw a "diagram". The "X" is where the pin can be placed. This is a right-handed diagram. Lefties, please invert. Of course, all this is assuming that your side weight can be balanced with or without a balance hole.
If this doesn't work, your idea of a roughly sanded cover could work, but only if it's drilled to accomodate the high-friction surface an 800-grit sand would give. Otherwise, you'll get the ball to bite early only to suffer roll-out. I'm using average ballspeed and average technique to make educated guesses here, so it may not be the most accurate.
Anyone correct me, perhaps?
